I was watching news and it talked about the birth of Isa and everything, and i realized that the mawlid is the same thing, right? celebrating the Prophet's birthday is the same thing. so isn't that imitating the kuffar?
please don't take it offensive, i'm just curious. and whoever celebrates it i'm not saying they imitate kuffars

The people who celebrate mawlid say it has some basis from the hadith; so you cannot say they imitate kuffar.

The people who celebrate mawlid say it has some basis from the hadith;

...and the qur'an. there is a verse as follows:

....and teach them to remember the Days of Allah... [Qur'an 14:5]

which has been used as a defence.

also the hadith that the Prophet was asked about the first day of the week, when he replied, "That was the day I was born. That was the day I received my message and when I migrated to al-Madinah." So these were days ingrained in the memory of the Prophet. Also, upon his arrival in Madinah, the Prophet saw the Jewish community celebrating an event, and when he inquired about it he was told, "This was the day on which God saved Moses and his people", to which the Prophet replied, "We deserve to look after the correct tradition of Moses."

Does anyone know exactly when the first Mawlid gathering took place?

I know the Isma`ili Shi`a Fatamids invented it - or so they say.

I apologize for my ignorance, but then what is the meaning of the hadith on imitating the kuffar?

Assalamu alaikum

Many people say that mawild is a recently innovated custom and som say that it was invented by the shi'tes but even historians (Ibn Batoota etc) from not long after the death of our beloved Prophet (Peace be upon Him) have credited and accounted Mawlid gatherings. If u research u will see that they go back a LOOONG time and all over the globe mawlid is celebrated....from Morroco to indonesia!

There is some detail to this. Imam Haskafi in his Durr Al Mukhtar states:

قوله لأن التشبه بهم لا يكره في كل شيء

meaning basically that the dislike (or impermissibilty) of imitating them does not refer to *all* things. Rather one of the important conditions is:

بل في المذموم وفيما يقصد به التشبه

that the one doing so actually *intends* by it imitation of the disbelievers or to be like them thinking their way is better. Then again, there is more detail to this aswell.

The same is mentioned in the great Hanafi fiqh text Bahr Al Ra'iq as well as by the great Ibn 'Abidin in his superlative commentary Rad al Muhtar who used the Prophetic hadith and action to prove it (in his case the example was regarding dress).

Also Mawlid does have textual basis:

The Obligation of Honoring the Prophet :saw:
The Prophet :saw: having fasted upon his birthday,
The obligation to remember the Prophet :saw: "wa laqad rafa`na laka dhikraka"
The general reccomendance of group dhikr,
The general reccomendance of praying in the mosque,
The general reccomendance of sending peace and blessings upon the Prophet :saw:.
The great reccomendance of praising the Prophet :saw: (of course not to the degree of what the Christians did to Sayyidina `Isa `Alayhis Salam),
The great reccomendance of gathering of family and friends for noble purposes,
The great reccomendance of learning (about the Prophet :saw:'s life and birth).

All of the above acts are either mandub or wajib. Thus Mawlid is not really anything more then combining them all into one. And no there is no set date for Mawlid - the Ba`alawis do them 100 times a year I have heard - and Allah knows best. As for singling out the specific date of the Prophet :saw:'s birth then this also does have basis as the Prophet :saw: fasting on the day he was born denotes that this day has special importance.

But all in all yes it is a new activity from all I have seen which is unconnected to the practice of the Salaf al-Salih and thus insha Allah a bid`ah hassana.

And maybe Salman can elaborate on any mistakes I have made.

Salam `Alaykum.
