Salam Alaykum,

The answer provided is talking about one night and one day journey. But even here in Saudi Arabia (whatever you may think of its non-alligeance to a madhab, still it is quite conservative in terms of women's travelling movement and so on), Muslim girls will go to school with a school bus, and Muslim women who work will be picked up by a bus, etc.

So is this also disallowed ?

The Fatwa of Shaykh Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari is based on the traveling done the distance of 3 days.

It is permissible for a lady to travel alone less than that distance.

assalamu Alaikum,

Did you brothers and sisters read the entire answer, coz the Sheikh covered the differences in the ruling. He mentioned 3 days, two days and even one day. He even said there are differences in the number of days permitted for a woman to travel alone depending on the reason. In the Hanafi school as a general guide 3 days or more i/e 48 miles + is forbidden for a woman to travel alone, but this is a general ruling.

He then went on to point out the fact that other ahadith exist which point out that in certain times and situations women are exposed to more danger in travelling alone, whether it be even for one day.

The jist of what i learned was that sisters should generally not travel alone regardless of the length of the journey, even if this be less than 48 miles, because there are many dangers posed to her. I follow the hanafi school and this is what I've always been made to understand. Where possible women should always go out with a mahram. If it's not possible, and it's not exceeding 48 miles, and she has a real need to go out then and only then is it permissible.

Many parents send their sons and daughters off to uni, say 20 miles away on a train. Do you think this is safe, for a sister going alone? I know too well the dangers of travelling alone even on modern trains, and buses. At certain hours of the day it's not safe, and unfortunately daylight hours can be just as bad. Personally I prefer to have someone with me, and i'd encourage my sisters to do the same where and when possible for their own safety.

Too many ppl take the 48 mile limit as the go ahead to gallavant around and vacate places that are sinful to say the least, or just waste time.

I'm sorry if i come across as too strict sisters but i've experienced harrassment just going to work alone, and my work place was just a 15-20 min walk from home, plus i had on full hijab. In the end i had to quit work for my own safety. But my point is take precautions sisters, if you have brothers or mates that can go out with you take full advantage of them. Keep safe.
