Assalamualaikum
Please can someone provide some referenced material regarding the following:
What is the hanafi ruling on covering the face and full body veiling for women? Is there a degree of practice like fard/wajib/sunnah?

Dont kno if this is of any help but here is surah 33 verse 53
Pickthall translation: O Ye who believe! Enter not the dwellings of the Prophet for a meal without waiting for the proper time, unless permission be granted you. But if ye are invited, enter, and, when your meal is ended, then disperse. Linger not for conversation. Lo! that would cause annoyance to the Prophet, and he would be shy of (asking) you (to go); but Allah is not shy of the truth. And when ye ask of them (the wives of the Prophet) anything, ask it of them from behind a curtain. That is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. And it is not for you to cause annoyance to the messenger of Allah, nor that ye should ever marry his wives after him. Lo! that in Allah's sight would be an enormity.

Listen to Shaykh Nuh's mp3 on niqab. He allows people in the West to take off their niqabs.
In the Maliki madhab it is only Wajib when in front of kuffar in the mashhur opinion. As for the rukhsa (which is used nowadays by scholars such as Shaykh Abuqanit) it is that you are allowed to take the niqab off in front of the kuffar.
Also there is ijm`a that you must wear the niqab in fear of fitna. If not ijm`a at least agreed upon by the popular opinion in the Maliki, Shafi`i, and Hanafi madhabs from what I have seen. And Allah knows best.
Omar.

Asalaam Alaikum
I've heard niqaab is waajib in all four madhabs, due to the times we live in and the fitnah involved. As to the verse that was quoted (33:56), it specifically refers to the ummul mo'mineen (the wives of the prophet (saw)) as they were not like other women so they had greater obligations placed upon them, thus niqaab was actually made fardh upon them. There is no clear cut verse in the Quran saying the believing women must wear niqaab, as is the case with hijaab and jalbab. The verse about jalbab is as follows:
[Surah Al-Ahzaab, Verse #59]
‘O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks ("Jalabib") veils all over their bodies (screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way Tafseer Al-Qurtabi) that is most convenient that they should be known (as such) and not molested: and Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful."
So some mufassireen have taken the explanation of the word 'jalbab' to include some sort of face covering. But baisically because there is no clear cut verse about it for the believing women of the ummah, ikhtilaaf (differences of opinions) arises, and each difference of opinion is valid as long as it is backed up with Quran and Sunnah.
Also a fatwa varies from one place to another. So niqaab maybe waajib in one city, but not in another. This might because if a sister wears niqaab she'l be more likely to get physically attacked and that is not the purpose of niqaab. Yet in other more multicultural cities, where niqaab is better tolerated maybe the fatwa there would be different.
