Assalamulikum WR WB,

Their original leader Imam Shahid Hasan Al Banna was definately Ahle Sunnah Wal Jammah but most modern day members will probably be considered not to be a part of the Ahle Sunnah Wal Jammah, as many of them do not believe that Taqlid of Madhabs is neccessary. The Ikwan in India Sub Cont is known as Jamati Islami, naturually like any large group it has many people of ahle sunnah and many people who are not. But I believe and have evidence to suggest that the modern day leaders of this group are not of ahle sunnah wal jammah. Recently the biggest East London Mosque has kicked off with the Hanafis Sunnis regarding taqlid and sunnah muqadah etc. The problem with the group is they take the works of Maulana Maududi and Syed Qutb, and these figures although may have written some decent books have also written some very dangerous and heretic stuff and they had free thinking aqeedahs and therefore rarely confirmed to ijma.

Allah SWT Knows best.

While Imam Shaheed Hasan al-Banna was most definitely from ahl al-sunna, especially while growing up - he was trained in the hanafi madhhab and even joined a tariqa... eventually formulated his own wird for recitation by members of the ikhwan - which evidently was initially quite a spiritual organisation...

unfortunately, it seems that later in his life he may have salafi leanings... that goes without saying with regards to Qutb and Mawdudi and others...

the ikhwan as it exists today is made up of many different groupings and structures - and is has been anti-sufi and more favourable to the salafiyyah... however, there have been those who have accepted tasawwuf - albeit without the tariqa aspect... Generally, they don't beleive taqlid is necessary though they don't condemn it - rather they promote a 'mix and match' method... as promoted by Shaykh Qaradawi and the institute he set up in France.

While there is sincerity in all these groups, at the end of the day they create a groupist mentality in which everyone else is wrong or not following the correct method.

the ikhwan, according to Shaykh AbdalQadir as-Sufi, has created concepts such as 'islamic' banking and 'halal' usury - which are essentially haram insitutions with islamic clothing.... unfortunately it is probably unavoidable in this currect world...

Allah knows best..

P.S. The ikhwan has a HUGE following in Egypt and among Egyptian emigrants in the USA... especially the East coast, where they near enough run all the masjids...

:salam:
not at all, in fact you're very much on target. they also run most of the non-salafi islamic schools in the area. :mash: they've done a lot of work building community infrastructure. i have noticed though, that as the children of these communities grow older, some of the more religious of them, and here i am quoting directly, feel that as the ikhwan is not really a knowledge based movement, there must something better. unfortunately after a steady diet of no madhahabs/ no tasawwuf etc they tend to gravitate towards.......
yup you guessed it, the infamous dawah . :thumbsdow
sigh
