We do not fast on Ashura for any reason relating to the Prophet's Family. Instead, we fast on Ashura because this is the day that Prophet Musa (as) used to fast because Allah freed his people on this day. In a Hadith, the Prophet (s) said that the Jews fast on this day, but in reality, the Muslims have a greater claim on Prophet Musa (as) than the Jews, so that's why we fast on this day as well.

In regards to the event of Kerbala, it is highly likely that the massacre did not take place on the 9th or 10th of Muharram but rather much afterward. The Shia simply chose this date like the Christians chose winter to be Christmas even though it really went down in Summer.

In regards to Kerbala, what happened was that the Prophet's grandson (Hz Hussain) went to join the people of Kufa who had taken Bayat under him instead of under Yezid Bin Muawiyya. The people of Kufa betrayed Hadrat Hussain (ra) at the last moment and that's why he was easily killed on that day.
