Dear brothers in Islam,

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

I am currently a college student residing in Riyadh, and I plan to join a madrassah, insha'allah; but I have little or no information about madrassahs. I'm confused whether I should join a madrassah or a university. Which is better in what way? Also, I want to know if there are any good madrassahs that teach most kinds of Islamic sciences, especially in Shafi'i fiqh. What are their locations (especially in countries such as Egypt, Syria, Jordan, etc. even Saudi Arabia) and when do their sessions start; and most importantly, what are their requirements? Do I need a college (or any other) degree? Any info will help. Thanks in advance. Wassalam.

:salam:

Your interest is in Shaffii Madhab, so I wont be able to help you out..

However we do have proper Madrassah in South Africa catering Shaffii Madhab. If you need their info, let me know..

Now as for the question, as to what is better Madrassah or University. I can tell you Madrassah's have more rohaaniyat to them. See, the primary aspect of Madrasah Vs University is the method of study. and since Islamic Studies is based largely on tranditional ways, it is vital that the the mode of study is also traditional.

Unless Middle Eastern universities have a more "Halaqa environment" like in Zaytuna Inst. where women are on one side of the wall and men on the other AND the teacher is in front. Whereas Madrasa's have a strict environment of no women.

WHats best for you would be that you go and tryout both. see what works for you. Me being in a madrassah think its the bestway to go..
