:bism:

I had heard previously some orientalist assertions that Rasulullah sallallahu 'alaihi wasalaam had stated that al lat and al uzza's intercession was to be sought, or some such blather. I'd heard it previously, and never paid any mind to it (I gave it as much thought as Ibn Ishaq's assertion that Rasulullah sacrificed to idols when he was younger  )

I ran across the story again in Ar-Raheeq Al Makhtum, this time it stated that the pagans invented the story after they got caught up in the recitation of An-Najm.

So, anyone care to fill me in?

That's called the Gharaneeq incident. Different Ulama have had different takes on it however none of the explanations prove what the orientalists, christian or shi'ite missionaries seek to portray from the incident i.e that the Quraan has been altered.

salaams

please refer to Shaykh Gibril Haddad's analysis of the story of the cranes / the satanic verses at www.livingislam.org

It clears it up quite masterfully. The same is also available in his recently published work, 'Albani and his friends.'
