Salam Alaikum,
My father went on and on today about people who have the "evil eye" who can cause harm to people the moment they lay their eyes on them. It's commonly known in Urdu as "nazr". Anyhoo, does anyone know if this evil eye business has a basis in Islam? Are there any ayat/hadith to prove it? Thanks for your help

assalamu alaikum wr wb

some jewish lady in the time of the Prophet SAW had done some sort of spell or casted an evil eye towards the Prophet SAW, from that the surahs Falaq and Naas (113,114) came into place which talks about that (evil eye, suspicious, superstitions etc).
We are told to recite the 4 quls and aytul kursi as well as some dua'ahs daily and upon going to bed to ask Allah to guide you and protect you from shaytan and evil whisperings.

there's lots of jealous and envy going around... despite some ppl dont mean no harm, they just have that look that one look that's it and you are done for... its not the ppl that have the power but its one of Allah's tests that we have to go through to see how we handle it and how others handle it and if we still rely on Allah swt to help us through that.

i remember there was a time when i had my younger son and i was feeding him something and someone mentioned that he truly liked to eat a lot of that... despite they meant no harm or offense, something happened after that. He got very ill and was throwing up all the food or that meal he ate that day and after that day he never ate it until just recently, but at that time no matter how much i tried he would start to gag and it wasnt anything bad yet from that comment the person made just a small comment like oh my gosh he eats that a lot or he sure likes eating that, it wasnt their power but it was by Allah swt a test.
perhaps reciting the dhikr, surahs' and dua'ahs more will help in protecting us from such issues, though these issues and matters comes up every once in awhile when stuff happens and ppl get into superstitions, and when you're in doubt you can ask Allah swt for guidance and strength to go on.
insha'Allah
