Generosity
Once, the Muslims were returning from a battle, at noon everyone was ordered to take a rest (as was the custom of the Arabs). The Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam also selected for himself a place under a tree and went to sleep in the shade of it. He was woken up with a voice, loud and clear, "O’ Muhammad! Who is going to save you from me now?" Again he heard these words. The Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam opened his eyes to see a man, (from the enemies) holding a sword in his hand. The Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam calmly, most peacefully and fully confident said, "Allah." The Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam said it with such trust and faith in Allah that the man began to tremble. He trembled so much that the sword fell from his hand, the Holy Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam stood up quickly and took the sword then said to the person, the same words as the person had said. The person by now had realised that he had no way out. His life was in danger, he didn't want to risk his life, but on the other hand he didn't want to accept Islam. He knew what he had done was wrong, there was only one way out and that was to plead in front of the Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam. He said, "Be the best of whom has the sword in his possession." Meaning that the person with the sword in his hand has an option either to kill or forgive, and the better one being the forgiving one. Hence the villager is trying to say, be the best out of the two by forgiving me. The Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam with his kind and soft heart forgave the person and spared his life, and didn't have the heart to strike.
The Holy Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam was asleep, the person gave trouble by awakening the Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam and then used such an ill-mannered attitude, he was thirsty for the Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam’s blood, but when the Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam achieved the upper hand, the power and strength to slay the man, he merely sets him free.
