:salam:

I have a question regarding the Shadhili tariqah... would any of the murids of Shaykh Nuh on the forum be able to help?

Is it better to have finished salat al-qada before taking the tariqah, or can you take the tariqah and continue to do salat al-qada?

Wa alaykum as salam wa rahmatullahi, i think some of the brothers here will be more qualified to answer your question. But as far as i know, the question of salatul qada is one of an utmost importance to ones suluk in the shadhili tariq. And in the words of sheikh Nuh himself, may Allah bless him, the debt of Rabb has a better right to be paid off. Sheikh Nuh brings up the question of salatul qada once you have taken the tariq, and perhaps returning all one`s qada salats is a central mujahada of one of the muraqba lessons. So one can take the tariq before getting done with all of one`s qada salats, as the tariq will make one do that anyways.

I think most of the people take the tariq at suhbas, some via telephone. Suit yourself.

Yes these were the words of Shaykh Nuh that I was alluding to (may Allah bless him).

The next thing I wanted to ask was about taking the tariqah (how to go about giving bay'ah)... though I suppose I should start a new thread for that :insh:
:salam: Sidi,
The Shaykh also recommends that those wanting to take the tariqa listen to the 1998 Virginia Suhba lessons available at http://suhba.org/public/pub_lessons_jan98.html
It may seem like a lot of audio, but it will most likely answer all your questions.

The asl of the Shadhili path have been explained in many different ways, but Shaykh Nuh in that series states that they are: dhikr, mu'dhakara and mujahada fi nafs.

Since you're in London, you can also "take the Tariq" (Sheikh Nuh prefers this phrase rather than "giving bay'ah", as the process is more than merely giving bay'ah and taking on the wird al-'amm) through sidi Muhammad Isa Waley. You may find him if you attend one of the latifiyas which take place thorughout the week. If you want to do it through this process then insha Allahu Ta'ala we'll talk further the next time we're on MSN Messenger together.

As for performing the qadha salat, it is part of 'Lesson 2' of the muraqaba dars. It may be done before or during that time. My personal advice is to start it ASAP, as this will make it easier for you when you get to lesson 2, which is what is what I'm doing :D . Insha Allah, if we do this then our lesson 2 will be ralatively short.

Another advice I will give you is to take the tariq first and then perform the qadha salah. That way, consistency in performing them is much easier. Also, you draw infinitely closer to Him (Gloried is He) through the wird al-'amm as you are performing them. Sheikh Nuh recommends 5 days worth of qadha salah every day. I know, "it's a tall ordered business"! Plus if you die whilst in the tariqa the you have the intercession of all of the Awliya with in it, including the late Pole Abul Hasan al-Shadhili!

Hope this helps :D .

Wassalam.
