as-salamu `alaykum
just wanted to say what an awesome book this is:
'fiqh al-seera' by shaykh dr. muhammad sa'id ramadan al-buti.
i think once you have read lings and other good books of seera, this is one to get hold of. for each of the major events of the life of the prophet, there are sections called 'lessons and principles'. it is available in english translated as:
'the jurisprudence of the prophetic biogrpahy, and a brief history of the orthodox caliphate' translated by nancy roberts.
my own seera recommendations are as follows:
1. Abu Bakr Sirajuddin aka Martin Lings (rahimahullah) - the life of muhammad, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam
2. The same title but a 24 tape set (soon to be CD-set) by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf - the ultimate companion to the above book, as he highlights some 'problematic' areas of the book - which there are (see Shaykh Gibril Haddad's comments)
3. Muhammad: Man and Prophet/Messenger by Adil Salahi - this is an awesome read - detailed and good for non-muslim readers as it explains certain events, and acts to put rest any accusations or unwanted critique from modernists or orientalists. i believe imam suhaib webb recommended this one.
4. The Sealed Nactar - by Sh. Mubarakpuri. - am still reading this - so far its pretty decent. and is well referenced, with hadith sources etc.
5. Anwar al-Awlaki's CD-sets. again, still listening to these - despite his salafi tendencies - this is very good. in any case he uses Sh. Buti's book, ibn Kathir's and a few others.
still to read:
(6. Fiqh al-Seera by Sh. Muhammad al-Ghazali, rahimahullah) - if anyone else can comment, that would be great.
