i'm pretty sure in maliki fiqh its ok to have part of the mushaf in a pocket or something whilst in the toilet. as for the entire mushaf - sidi omar/lumumba may know more.

I queried the following:
Is it permitted to a take a pocket size Quran into the washroom on a train.
The reply was that it should not be done.
I don't have an online link to the above response as I queried it over the phone.
In addition if one does not have wudhu: If it's in it's own fixed protective covering you should use some cloth ( e.g. scarf ) to hold it ( the Quran & it's covering ) and place it somewhere safe, ideally the luggage compartment overhead, and then pick it back up in same manner. In other words you should not touch the fixed covering whilst not in wudhu.
If it's a cover wherein the Quran is kept and you take it out of there to read then it is ok to touch such a covering.
Regarding the fixed and non-fixed covering see following link (urdu) : http://www.shariahboard.com/fatwa/Quran/437.php

this is what i got
Question :
I always carry a Quran with me, no matter where I go, because I like to read it often. I keep it in my bookbag. What do I do if I am out somewhere and I have to go to the bathroom. I cant leave the Quran outside because someone might take it and so I just keep it in my bookbag and take both into the bathroom. Is this acceptable? Remember, in america public restrooms have a large open area, and a private toilet area. Where can I take my bag? Either place
Answer :
Praise be to Allaah.
If you can keep it outside, this is good, but if you are afraid that it will be stolen or lost, then it is OK to take it into the bathroom with you if it is inside a case or bag. But keep the bag away from the toilets, because this is better. And Allaah knows best.

I didn't go into the details that the Quran may be stolen if left outside and one had exhausted all plausible options to leave it outside and so forth when I queried. In Uk the toilets on a train are not spacious.
So I guess you can act upon the above response, but you should still try other options. You could place a label on the covering:
'The Noble Quran: Please handle with respect. Thankyou'
and also:
If found please contact: mobile number
And that should deter and inform anyone wishing to steal it :insh: when you leave it somewhere.
