Islamic ruling on ًWomen Walking or Climbing Stairs in front of Men

The other day, I was walking up the stairs and I was walking with a brother from my dawah group. I told him to go up before me because I didn't want to walk up the stairs with him behind me. I did this because I believe someone told me that it's fitna or could cause fitna if a woman walks in front of the man-especially going up the stairs. Now is there a ruling on this or something that would make it clear. You guys know what I mean-because as you walk up the stairs the eye level isn't where it should be..anyway. Is this precaution or just islamic do's and don'ts?

I remember hearing that the Shariah addresses the issue of men and women walking in a street. A men should walk in front of women ... this could certainly be one of the 'wisdoms'. Anywhoo, rule or no rule, Islam has provided us with guidelines to follow. Walking right behind a women going up the stars (or anywhere) only provides an opportunity for Shaitan to attack. Islam tells us that we should close the doors of to sin where it is possible.

In Pathaan villages, women do not usually go to the bazaars and markets. Whenever a women crosses the path of a man she moves over to the side of the street and goes against the wall (if there is a wall).

Of course, the more knowledgable persons should correct me if I've strayed.

Great reminder. If I'm ever in such a situation, I'll just rush ahead on my own so as to get in front and save myself.

best thing is to avoid walking/talking with non mehrams unless abosolutly neccasary

I completely agree with you, it would be case of Hayaa/modesty for a women not to go up the stairs before the man....and hayaa is part and parcel of being a muslimah.

Sorry, just wanted to add that I was under the assumption that the 'man walking a couple of paces before the woman' was in reference to the situation between husband and wife? Not a general situation?

if you check in the quran regarding the story of musa (as), after he killed the man and fled misr, he watered the flock for the two sisters. when the sisters returned home early the father (nabi shuaib alaihe salaam) told one of the girls to bring musa (as) back so he could reward him. when the girl met up with musa (as) and took him home, while walking to her home, he walked in front of her. when ever she wanted to change direction she would throw a rock in front of him and he would turn in that direction.
so yes it is better for the man to go ahead of a non mahram woman, and it is proven in the quran. it's not fatwa but it is advisable as it is the sunnah of one of the prophets
