On another forum, I read a similar question put to Murids of the Ba'Alawi Tariqah, so I thought to put one here as well. If any Shadhili can respond, I would greatly appreciate it.

What is the typical day like for a Shadhili Murid?
Besides the Wird in the morning and evening, what changes when a person take the Tariq? And supposing that you are not in an area where there are fellow murids, what do you do?

Sorry if the question sounds silly, but i would sincerly like to know.

The question doesn't sound silly at all. Though I first thought this was a thread on a day in the life of Imam Abu-l-Hasan!

If you can get hold of Sheikh Nuh Keller's booklet for those interested in taking the tariqa, then that is designed to answer this very question.

He writes in that that one's first task as a murid is to get the daily salat in order: one should first make sure one has performed 40 days of the obligatory salat five times a day without missing a single prayer.

It's actually available again Sidi. I just ordered a copy myself, as I lost mine on the bus. (May Allah guide the person who found it)

basic day that I gathered from the lectures of the shaikh and the tariqa notes

start day with tahajjud, fajr, wird al amm, hizbul bahr, wadhifah (and\or other hizbs) go about your day. of course make the fard salaat and sunnahs. Sometime in the day read a juz of Quran. Do wird al amm after asr or maghrib.
Before going to sleep recite the name Allah 66 times. Of course make as much dhikr as you can throughout the day.
The zuhd of the tariqa consists of leaving entertainment industry (ie no tv, no music, limit internet to buying\selling and benefitting the muslims, etc)
First leaving all haraam in your madhab then leaving all makruh in your madhab.
Study arabic at least 20min a week and listen to the words of your Shaikh at least 20 minutes a week.

That's the basics. Of course more detail is in the tariqa notes and the suhbas of the shaikh.

I think that is only for those who have an 'ijaza for it.

everyone in the tariqa was asked to do that. It is a general wird of the tariqa. At least since 2004.

How is memorising the awrad if you are not fluent in Arabic? Is it difficult?

:alhamd: my reading and writing Arabic is a bit slow, so at the moment memorising even a page of Qur'an is quite a big task in itself. Usually takes me about 2 weeks to gain reasonable memorisation of a surah. And I am still on the last juz.

I would imagine that is why the Shaykh puts such emphasis on learning the Arabic language. :)

Well my arabic sucks and I haven't memorized much, just the wird al amm and hizbul bahr. It took me way too long to memorize hizbul bahr becuase I was lazy and just read it instead of trying to memorize. But its not too difficult. You just have to put the time in.
Also getting the cd of the awrad being recited can help. They have it available on www.tariqatapes.com

If you read the hizb daily for several months, your brain will memorize it without you trying. At that point, it is only a question of you filling in the gaps, whether you know Arabic or not. If you do, all the better.
