:salam:
Someone asked me this and I just want to give them a proper explanation.
1) If Allah loves us like 70 or more times than our mothers (there is a hadeeth to a similar effect), how can he send us to hell.
2) Is it possible that Allah has created hell as an illusion to keep us in line, since a loving God cannot be wrathful.

Salam,
if i own a book, and i decide for whatever reason that i am going to burn the book. Have i oppressed the book even though it did nothing? No, because i own it and have right over it completely. Similarly, Allah (swt) created us and owns us to the extent that nothing that Allah (swt) would do to us would be unjust or oppressive.
However, because Allah (swt) is the most merciful, he will not send the righteous to hell, and those who are sent to hell, but beleive in La ilaha ilAllah, will be removed from the fire after a set time. If it wasn't for Allah's love and mercy towards us, we'd all go to hell.
2 - Allah (swt) is not wrathful in the sense that he is not seeking revenge or retribution. People are sent to hell because of Allah's justice, and people are placed in heaven because of Allah's mercy.

Q2. Is it possible that Allah has created hell as an illusion to keep us in line, since a loving God cannot be wrathful
The sentence that cometh from Me cannot be changed, and I am in no wise a tyrant unto the slaves (50:29)
(The sentence will be) "Throw, throw into Hell every contumacious Rejecter (of Allah)!- (50:24)

Or who is he that will be an army unto you to help you instead of the Beneficent? The disbelievers are in naught but illusion (67:21)

Ye shall certainly see Hell-Fire!
Again, ye shall see it with certainty of sight! (102:6-7)
---
This is the Hell which the Sinners deny (55:43)

As Salaamu Alaykum,
1. As mentioned, Allah has complete ownership over us, and His sending us into the hell-fire will be not due to the lack of His love.
It is clearly mentioned in the Qur'an as to what path we are supposed to take. Therefore, if we walk upon that path then it is not Allah who has been the cause of our going into the hell-fire, but merely our own fault. "wa maa dhalamoona, wa lakin kaanu anfusahum yadhlimoon" meaning " and they (by their ingratitude) did not harm us, but were only harming themselves".
2. Thorugh many Ahadeeth and Qur'anic verses, it is apparent that the Hell-fire has been created. Qur'anic verses also show that the hell-fire will never be filled until Allah wishes so. When Hell will be asked "are you filled" The fire will reply "is there more".
There are two ways into looking at the hell fire. One way is to look at it as a punishment from Allah. The other is as a form of Mercy.
If Allah wanted, He could have clearly defined what was expected from His servants. Those who went against Him would have to go to Hell and those who obeyed Him would go to Heaven. But Allah created the Hell-fire as a Mercy for the Muslims. A method in which we can cleanse ourself and enter Jannah, as no person filthy with sins can enter Jannah.
In conclusion, the Hell fire is a form of punishment, but only for the Disbelievers.
Wallahu A'lam bis Sawaab. Wal Ilmu indalllah Al Latef Al Khabeer.
