what relationship should a student have with their shaykh?
I was wondering in the sense that: what questions should a mureed ask, to better themselves. What advice should be sought after................?

I think there might a be a book or a chapter in a book on Adab ul-Mureed or Talib Al Alim/Mannerism of the Student or the Student of Knowledge.

Consider the relationship to be like a best friend relationship as well as a father and son relationship etc.

I swear to it that deen can not be obtained from books!

Formal religious knowledge may be achieved via reading, but true religiosity can never be obtained without serving eagerly at the footsteps of a master.

the site has more info about your question too.
