New York: The world is "veil crazy." The main character of
'At Her Feet' describes the media’s obsession with Muslim Women
as such. Playwright Nadia Davids critically acclaimed play 'At Her
Feet' takes those oft-negative images of Muslim women, explores and
complicates them with this one woman show. Starring award-winning
actress Quanita Adams, 'At Her Feet', is constructed from several
tales, all expertly set against the background of Cape Town, a
remarkably westernized South African city.
The title 'At Her Feet' comes from the Islamic Hadith or saying of
the Prophet Muhammad: 'Paradise lies at the feet of your mother.'
'At Her Feet' is a one woman show with many memorable characters that
support the exploration and offer social commentary on the plight of
the Muslim woman; there is: Aisha, a university student and dub poet
with a passion for the Black Consciousness Movement and Marxism.
Beneath her brash exterior and Che Guevara T-shirt is a vulnerable
heart; also, Tyra who works in a travel agency, a job she has been
driven to loathe since September 11, among many other Muslim women
who tell it as they know it.
The strength Nadia Davids production lies in her writing. At times
the monologues flower into a richly evocative poetic style — a
powerful use of language which is as rare as it is welcome.
'At Her Feet' is gripping, richly dialogic theatre, which
triumphantly dignifies, without victimizing a set of voices that
needs increasing airtime in on the world’s stage.
pass this onto your mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, daughters, and wives..and all the other female relatives and sisters amongst the community.. print it out and post in masjid too...
