Asalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Is it wajib to recite two suwar in Salaah?
If a person only knows Surat Al-Fatiha can be in any way perform Salaah?
Because according to Hanafi madhhab a person can't recite from the Qur'an.

Thank You/Shaul

Yes it is Wajib to recite:

- a Surah
- or a lengthy Aayat
- or three small Aayats

.. after Surah Fatiha in the first two Rakaats of Fard Salaah and in all the Rakaats of Wajib, Sunnah and Nawafil Salah

Ref: Taleemul Haqq (http://www.inter-islam.org/Actions/Part8.html#Waajib (necessary acts) in Namaaz) )

If a person only knows Surat Al-Fatiha can be in any way perform Salaah? Because according to Hanafi madhhab a person can't recite from the Qur'an.

They will recite whatever they know of Salaah in Arabic and not in English. Those parts they have not learnt as yet then they may recite SubhanAllah thrice.

Until a convert learns the complete Salaat, they may say "Allaahu Akbar" when starting the Salaat and say "SubhaanAllah" thrice in every posture. They should also make an effort to learn the complete Salaat with Qiraat, etc. as quickly as possible ( Mufti Ebrahim Desai (http://askimam.org/fatwa/fatwa.php?askid=f9d3ee8309d8f5cf0f5d9c30e0ac65f7) )

Apart from it being Wajib to recite:

- Surah al-Fatiha
- another Surah (or long Ayat or 3 short Ayats) after Surah al-Fatiha in the first two Rakaats of Fard Salaah and in all the Rakaats of Wajib, Sunnah and Nawafil Salah

If you also wanted to know whether to recite a different Surah in alternate rakaats of a given Salah is Wajib and if not done so; will it spoil the Salaah then the ruling is ..

It is undesirable to repeat a Surah in another Rakaat.

However, that does not necessitate Sajdah-e-Sahw ( Mufti Ebrahim Desai (http://askimam.org/fatwa/fatwa.php?askid=0c60487ce7201a875593fa81bc7d79b9) )

So if someone only knows one short Surah (e.g. Surah Ikhlas i.e. Qul HuwAllahu...) then although undesirable they should nonetheless read it in all rakaats (excluding the third and fourth of Fard Salaah) until they learn additional Surahs/verses.
