Assalamu 'Alaikum!

My name is Brian and I've converted to Islam and have been a Muslim up to a year now. I have read & studied books about Islam and I'm still in the process of learning. There are things that I'm working on and plan to work on in the future. Some are these:

*Memorize specific surahs & ayats in the Qur'an to use towards prayer, reading the Qur'an during Ramadan and to fully understand it the way that it was meant to be which is in Arabic.

*To pray 5 times a day (I still haven't done that yet but Insha Allah I will soon)

I also participated in my first Ramadan which was a wonderful & eventful experience which wasn't that hard for me. The first day of Ramadan was very easy.

I've have been lurking around on the Sunni Forum but didn't have the chance to actually post. I'm really excited to be on this board and talk to other fellow Muslim brothers and sisters and share the incredible experience of being a Muslim and practicing this beautiful religion that is about peace, having faith and submitting to Allah, and believing His word and the holy book called The Qur'an.

Before becoming a Muslim I always believed in God but never applied my life to way that God want us human beings to apply our lives to. I shared the same belief as Christians did that Jesus was the son of God but until I have heard from a Muslim friend of mine who told me all about Islam (which really interested me) and about Jesus not being the son of God, I thought about it and I told myself that it did make sense. How can Jesus be the son of God when God can not have a child and does not have one. There is only one God and that is Allah. Mary is the mother of Jesus but Jesus is a prophet, not the son. I fully accept the beliefs that I was told and what I read and when I think about it it makes total sense to me.

Insha Allah in the years to come I hope that I can fully understand the Arabic language, learn more about Islam, read & recite the Qur'an in Arabic and learn full meaning of passages that I still may not understand, pray 5 times a day, etc. May Allah help and guide me on the journey of Islam.

By being on this forum I already feel comfortable and I hope that any of you can help answer any questions that I have.

Wassalam.

:salam:

in my opinion, the priority for you at this stage is:

1. learning the essential tenets of faith.

(if other members can provide a link or recommend a book that covers basic aqida)

2. learning basic islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), so you are able to perform your worship in the correct manner.

i.e. a book containing the basic rules of the rites of worship e.g. purification, prayer, fasting, zakat.

do you have access to a scholar?

re: arabic, it is advisable to start basic arabic, but don't rush as this is something you can devote yourself to at a later stage.

as one of my teachers stated, the bare minimum of the Qur'an you should know is:

1. Surat al-Fatiha (recited in every prayer)

2. Surat al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112)

...and the short ones at the end are easier to start learning.

:insh: that should keep you busy!

let us know if you need any help, where you are, etc.

No I don't have direct access to a scholar whom I can talk to face-to-face but I do have a list of Islamic scholars names and their e-mail addresses which my fellow Muslim friend gave to me.

At this stage I have learned a few arabic words but I will take my time and not rush through it. Also a few months ago I've been reciting and learning the Al-Fatiha in both English and Arabic and I have been listening to audio recitations of the Al-Fatiha to help me.

Assalamu Alaikum!

Do any of you know anything about the Three Fold Journey? I've been doing some reading/studying and I've read about this and the three stages to it are The Animal Self, The Accusing Self & The Restful Self. Now is this right: Is the Three Fold Journey about 3 stages that a person goes through if he/she is in a struggle to come to the realization that Allah is real and that we must rely & trust on him? Shukran.

Alhamdulillah for reverting back to the true path which is the path of Prophets Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.
As my brother sufisticated have said, if you have access to Islamic scholars near you, that is the best method of learning.
May Allah guide us all, amin
