they are all correct.
as a muqallid (follower of scholars) you are not responsible for determining that. Just like a passenger in a plane is not responsible for learning how to fly, he trusts the pilot to do his job.
Similarly all the traditional scholars ( followers of one of the 4 sunni madhabs) have a chain of teachers going back to Rasul Allah :saw:
Just like the isnad of a hadeeth, similarly an isnad of scholarship. I was taught by x who was taught by Y .......... who was taught by a Sahabi who was taught by Rasool Allah :saw:.
You follow the school of thought most prevalent in your area, as you can call upon local scholars to answer questions for you.
for additional resources on schools etc

Learn the basic of Islam, most importantly believe in Allah s.w.t and His messenger Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.
Follow this 2 and you won't go astray.
After the basic, don't stop there learn and research further and ask God himself.
He will show you the way.
If you want it so bad, and if God allows it, the prophet himself will guide you.
all you have to do is believe and read and research, open yr mind up and only believe in Allah and his Prophet Muhammad.
B4 you do all this ofcourse you have to know the basics, like what the others tell you
go to the nearest Islamic centre and find out and learn, maybe after you know the history and stuff, go deeper and unlock the secrets of Allah which you are carrying with you unknowingly
Be warned, you have to know the basic or you'll get confuse.
Islam is the most powerful and beautiful religion in modern day.
95% of muslim are hoping to go to Paradise
Try not to follow them.
Be among a select few whom do things not because of paradise but because of Allah s.w.t(Confusing I know...that is why you must know the basic of Islam before you go to the advance level)

As a general reference (since you join SUNNI Forum ;) ),
In faith, the correct Aqidah is that of the Ahl as-Sunnah wal Jamaah, formulated by Imam Abul Hasan al-Ashaari and Imam Abu Mansur al-Maturidi. Shi'ism, Wahhabism, "Salafi" are a no no :D
In Shariah (Islamic Law), follow what's prevalent near your place, be it Maliki, Hanafi, Shafi'i or Hanbali madhhab. Don't follow those who are la-madhhabi
Hope I've been of some help.

Dean, I love your reply. It makes the most sense. I have been studying Islam for over 4 years now and I think I know the basics. But exactly what would the basics be, like studying History of Quran and Hadiths etc etc. Could you please help me?
JakakAllahu Khairan
Thank you so much!
