When the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) sighted the moon of Rajab (two months before Ramadan) he used to pray to Allah in the following words:

اَللّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِى رَجَبَ وَ شَعْبَانَ وَ بَلِّغْنَا رَمَضَان

Allahumma barik lana fi Rajab wa Sha'ban wa ballighna Ramadan

O Allah! Make the months of Rajab and Sha'ban blessed for us, and let us reach the month of Ramadan (i.e. prolong our life up to Ramadan, so that we may benefit from its merits and blessings)
[Narrated by Imam at-Tabarani and Imam Ahmad]

We all wake up at least once a day:
http://www.makedua.com/display_dua.php?sectionid=1

Alhamdu-li-llaahil-lazi ahyaanaa ba'da maa Amaata-naa wa ilayhin-nushuur.
All praise be to Allah, Who gave us life after death, and unto Him will be the return.

Abu Hurairah (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ( ) said:
“Shaytaan ties three knots at the back of the head of any one of you when you go to sleep. On every knot he reads and exhales the following words, “The night is long, so stay asleep.” [i.e. Do not wake up in time for Fajr prayer.] When one awakes and remembers Allah, one knot is undone; and when one does wuduu’, another knot is undone; and when one performs the prayer, the last knot is undone and one gets up energetic with a good heart in the morning; otherwise one gets up lazy and with a mischievous heart.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Asalamu 'alaykum,

For the past 3 or 4 years in order to prepare I usually listen to two talks by Shaykh Riyadh Ul Haq: one is called Ramadan, Month of Virtues and the other is called, I've Forgotten.

I also read the last chapter of Purification of the Heart by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf which is all about Ramadan.

What do other people do?

May Allah grant us all the tawfiq to use this month (Rajab) and the next one (Sha'ban) to prepare, ameen.

Yes, i also listen to that Shaykh Riyadh talk. I think it's called "Ramadhan - The Spiritual Month" wherein the Shaykh explains how the sustenance of the soul is heavenly and Ramadhan is the month for focusing on the soul and connecting to the higher, heavenly things...amongst other things.
It is the month wherein the worldly things are sacrificed and hence the spiritual, non-worldly elements come to the fore and are prime for development.
The other talk by Shaykh Riyadh i think is called "Virtues of Ramadhan" and from what i remember it is pretty much based around the ahadith contained within the Ramadhan section of "Fadhail-e-Amaal".
Those hadith in "Fadhail-e-Amaal" are powerful and stir one into action and so that is another book which i tend to read with family in order to prepare us and get us in the mood for the great month, so to speak.
Lastly, i think reading the khutbah that Rasoolullah :saw: gave to the Sahaba (may Allah be pleased with them) on the eve of Ramadhan is the best reminder. After all, how can one better those words at that time? (i think this khutbah is also contained within "Fadhail-e-Amaal").
