Du’a for acquiring good memory
Answered by Shaykh Ilyas Patel
I seem to have a lot of trouble remembering things and concentrating, and in a recent exam I performed very badly, is there a dua I could pray which would help me to be able to memorize things better or help me with my studies?
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate
Read the following 10 times a day. It is a very effective dua for acquiring good memory and not to suffer forgetfulness:
First recite verse 79 Sura Al-Anbiya Juz 17
Fa fahhamnaha Sulayman wakullan aataynahu hukmaw wa ilma.Wa sakkharna ma’a Dawuda wa’l-jibala yusabbihna wattayr wakunna fa’ileen.
Then read the following:
Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyumu Ya Rabba Musa waHarun waNuh waIbrahim waIsa waMuhammadin Sallallahu alayhi wasallam Akrimni bi jawdatil hifdhi wasur’ati fahhmi, Warzuqni hikmata wama’rifatal ilmi wa thabat- dhihni wa’l aqli wa’l-hilmi bi haqqi sayyidina Muhmmadin Sallallahu alayhi wasallam Ya Rabbal Alamin.
O’ Living, O’ One Through Whom All Subsists, O’ Lord of Musa, Harun, Nuh, Ibrahim, and Muhammad, honour me with good memory and understanding, Bestow me with wisdom, true knowledge and a firm intellect and mind with the blessing of Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace).
One of the most importing things is to avoid sins, and if you do commit a sin, one should perform two rak’ats of Tawba and ask forgiveness from Allah and the same each time.
And Allah Knows Best
- Ilyas

Question:
4) I since a young age wanted to become a muhaddith and a hafiz, can you tell me of a dua which I can read that may support my memory and that may help what I have learnt in the past strong.
Answer:
4. To improve your memory the following dua is very beneficial. It was prescribed to Ali (Radhiyallahu Anhu) when he complained of his weak memory. The method of dua is thus:
On a Thursday night, wake up in the last portion of the night. If the last portion is difficult, then wake up the middle of the night. If that too is difficult, then the first portion of the night. Perform four rakat in such a manner that in the first rakah you recite Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah Yaseen. In the second rakah Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah Al-Dukhan. In the third rakah Surah Al-Fatiha and Al-Sajdah. In the forth rakah Al-Fatiha and Surah Al-Mulk. After completing the Salah praise Allah and send salutations upon Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) and the rest of the Prophets. Ask for forgiveness for all the Muslims and all those who passed away with Iman. Then at the end recite the following dua:

What the brother has mentioned is not sunnah but it is something which was prescribed by pious elders from experience. As long as someone does not regard it to be sunnah it is permissible to practice on it.
