View Full Version : what is the ruling on women swimming in the beach if they are mensturating
salaam all
i have been told that it is haram for a women to swim in the beach if she has her period. i asked why and the people replied because allah has made it tahir and that if a women goes swimming in the beach with her period she makes everyone in the beach unpure and also because of the angel that has been appointed for the beach. I asked my husbband and it confused him too. I don't think the people answered us correctly.
this confused me greatly i understand that allah has made the beach tahir and that we can make wudhoo with the water but doesn't our human waste also go in the beach and then doesn't that also make it unpure and wouldn't that make the people unpure also
Are these people right or have they got it wrong? I really need to know what is really right about this.
thanxs

Have you ever seen how they lure sharks on the Discovery channel? Bad idea.
Anyway, is there even an Islamic way for women to swim on the beach?

I have read in the Reliance, that an impurity in such a great quantity of water will not make the water impure.
This is in the Shafi'i madhhab.

I believe there are Islamic swimsuits that provide proper coverage, although one woud have to find a secluded beach i would imagine.

There are two issues:
1) Not being a fitnah for others, and
2) Avoiding the fitnah of others
I don't think you'll find a beach where everyone has the awrah covered, it's best to avoid.

Near my house they build this new Masjid, also known as a Muslim Community Center for the muslima's especially. Outside the masjid, they built a swimming pool, with walls that go up high as 12 to 15 feet, so that when the sisters swim in the pool, the brothers cannot see them, as they have high walls covering them, and a tinted ceiling. Anyways, I thought it was pretty cool for the sisters since they always complain about how in middle school they had to jump in the pool with all their heavy clothes on.
As for the ocean, and impurity, like the brother above said, and its a proven fact that any impure thing in such a large quantity of water will not impure the water.

The issue has couple of aspects which should be adressed.
1. Covering of Awrah in between Muslim women and among non-muslim women/immoral women.
The ‘Aurah of a female from another female is from the navel to the knees (including the knees). Therefore if the non-Muslim females swim with any part of their bodies from the navel to the knees exposed then the Muslim females should not accompany them. (Raddul Muhtaar, Vol. 5, Page 262, Fataawaa ‘Aalamgeeriyyah, Vol. 5, Page 327, Al-Bahrur Raaiq, Vol. 8, Page 193)
Note: Although the ‘Aurah of a female from another female is from the navel to the knees the Fuqahaa have mentioned that a Muslim female should cover her entire body in the presence of non-Muslim females as well as immoral and immodest Muslim females. (Fataawaa ‘Aalamgeeriyyah, Vol. 5, Page 327)
{From a Fatwa from Jamia Mahmoodiya Springs}
2. Women wearing tight clothing in front of other women (as in swiming suits)
The clothing must hang loosely enough and not be tight-fitting show the shape and size of the woman's body, The reason for wearing a garment which is wide and loose fitting is that the on of Muslim women's clothing is to eliminate lure and beauty of her body from the eye of the beholder. Skin-tight body etc. may conceal the skin color, yet they display the size and of the limbs and body. The following hadith proves this clearly: Usamah ibn Zaid said: “ Allah's Messenger (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) gave me a gift of thick Coptic cloth he had received as a gift from Dahiah Al-Kalbi, and so I gave it to my wife. Thereafter, the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) asked thy didn't you wear the Coptic cloth? I replied: I gave it to my wife. Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) then said: Tell her to wear a thick gown under it ( the Coptic garment) for I fear that it may describe the size of her limbs. “ narrated by Ahmad, AI-Bayhaqi, and AI-Haakim)
{from an article regarding hijab from Jamiat}
I remember a couple of years back we had an issue of women in S.Africa going to beeches with burqa on .. guess how much they swam. I assume a sister who is cautious about her duties will look into these aspects before looking for a public swim..
