However, a book called "The Prisoners of Malta" is available which gives some details of the Shaykh's life. See this link:

What would be good is if someone who speaks both English and Urdu would translate the biograpies of the Elders into English, as that way, we English speaking Muslims would be able to keep a connection with these great people from our past. Books like Tazkiratul Rasheed, and Tazkiratul Khaleel, and so on.

Assalamu 'alaikum

Jazakallah for your replies.
The books you have mentioned are mentioned in Aap Beti and I'm saddened to know they're not available in english...
Are there any other books [in english] that give details about our elders in a similar way that Aap Beti does? Amazing book, may Allah raise Shaykhul Hadeeth's rank in Jannah a million times....his work on Aap Beti was partly an effort to not waste time while his eyes were healing!
Please share other books, and if possible, links to where they can be bought [like The Prisoners Of Malta].

The book that Shaykh Ismaeel Nakhuda reviewed is the following:

Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madni - A biographical Study (http://www.azharacademy.com/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=1004)

This is something that has been playing on my mind recently. There is a lack of English books available regarding the lives of the Akaabir of Deoband.
Books like the translation of Aap Beti are rare. A translation of Sayyad Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi's :rahim: book on the life & Mission of Maulana Muhammad Ilyas :rahim: was published in India. I don't know if any new editions have been published recently but it should be available in the UK somewhere.

People keep discussing the stance of the Akaabir on issues such as the Mawlid, Istigatha and it seems many people harbour suspicious thoughts regarding these august men

:subh: why can't we draw inspiration from their sincerity, humility, simplicity, their piety (taqwa), selflessness, love for Allah :taala: and His Messenger :saw: and their attachment to the sunnah!

For those who can read Urdu, I would recommend Mufti Taqi sahib's hafidhahullah 'Akaabir Deoband kiya they.' It is full of beautiful stories and anecdotes about those Akaabir who had a close afilliation with his father, Mufti Muhammad Shafi :rahim:

If anyone knows of any more in English, please recommend ...

As the original post was about Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madni :rahim: I thought I'd share some of what Hadhrat Shaykh al-Hadith Maulana Muhammad Zakariyya :rahim: said about him in his Al-E'tidaal:

Maulana Madni was an exceptional personality and for me to even try and emulate him, would be an impossible task and foolishness on my part. How can I possibly emulate him whose life on journeys and at home was the same, whose hard work by night was the same by day - a man who felt no need for rest nor ever seemed to tire (after his continuos struggles and hard work.) Such a man was he, that he would return from Hijaz and disembark at Karachi. From there, he would immediately board a train and travel for two days and nights arriving at Deoband at 5 a.m in the morning and then at 6 a.m he would take his place in front of a class to teach Bukhari.

one should bear in mind that Maulana Madni commenced his lectureship (teaching Islamic sciences) in Madinah Muawwarah. (He taught Hadith in Masjid al-Nabawi) For many years, he lived such a life of dedication and devotion, that at times, he lectured twelve or thirteen classes daily, sleeping for only two or three hours per day. The rest of his time, he spent in studying or preparing lectures for the following days classes.

Now, hear about his spiritual training. he was trained by that man who is the ocean of love and divine knowledge, Hadhrat Shaykh al-Arab wa al-Ajam Haji Imdadullah Muhajir Makki :rahim:. in the blessed and Holy city of Madina, in such a blesed place as Masjid-e-Ijaabat and under the supervision of his Shaykh he devoted himself to Thikrullah for a very long time for the sake of purifying himself spiritually. Thereafter, the completion and polishing of his training was done under the guidance of Hadhrat Rashid Ahmad Gangohi :rahim: Therafter, for many years, his spiritual training reached its pinnacle and maturity under the sympathetic and benign shadow of Hadhrat Shaykh al-Hind (Maulana Mahmood Hasan) :rahim: in the seclusion of their exile on the Island of Malta.

In his Aapbeti, Hadhrat Shaykh writes:

During my life, I have heard no-one else weeping so much in Du'a before Allah in the latter part of the night as I have heard Maulana Madni :rahim: and my father :rahim: Very often, inspite of my deep sleep I used to be woken up by his crying. Hadhrat Madni would recite Hindi lamentations with so much pain and sorrow. I was unacquainted with Hindi and could not understand, but the wailing and crying still echoes in my ears. It was almost like a child who was receiving a hiding and is crying. As much courage as Hadhrat had, as brave as he was and as much as he encountered ordeals, I have not seen this (type of crying) in any of my elders.

There is the biography of Hazrat Yusuf , the son of Shaikh Muhammed Ilyas, who is famous for his work in the field of Dawah:

http://www.al-rashad.com/Biographies/Biography-of-Mawlana-Muhammad-Yusuf-Amire-Tabligh/

From the same bookshop, there is a book which gives brief introduction to many of the elders of the past century:

http://www.al-rashad.com/Biographies/Eminent-Ulama/

There is also the book by Hazrat Nadwi (Rahmatullahi Alayhe) about Hazrat Muhammed Ilyas, which has been mentioned in one of the posts above.

Aap Beeti, the autobiography of Shaikh Zakariyya is a really special book. He writes in a very informal way, and it seems as you read it, that you are actually sitting in his company. However, the Aap Beeti that is available in English, as far as I know, is not the complete one that is available in Urdu. I think that there are some more parts to it that have not been translated. If anyone can confirm this or deny it, that would be good.

There is a short book called "Hazrat Shaikh's Three (Deceased) Daughters" by Ml. Shahid who I think is a descendent of Hazrat Shaikh (Rahmatullahi Alayhe).

Also, there is a short but interesting book called "Hazrat Shaikh's Adherence to the Sunnah and Love for the Prophet (SallAllahu Alayhe Wa Sallam)" by Hazrat Sufi Iqbal who was one of the Khulafa of Hazrat Shaikh.

Both books are available from Darul Uloom Madania.

http://www.madania.org/bookshoplist.php?lang_id=2

Also, I think Hazrat Yusuf Motola (of Darul Uloom Bury) has written a book in urdu called "Hazrat Shaikh aur unka Khulafa Ikram" which is about Shaikh Zakariyya and his students. An very short extract from this book has been published in English, called "Hadhrat Sheikul Hadeeth and I" and is available here:

http://www.theislamicestablishment.com/Product_Details.asp?depID=1&catID=7&pid=880

There are also two articles on the following website, which give some details about Shaikh Zakariyya's life.
