I know in islam the intention of one's deeds are essential to proper worship. My question is this. If one's intention is to get something from Allah for the deed/deeds that ones is doing. Is that allowed? is that what we are supposed to be doing?
it gets confusing only because I hear that if one does deeds in order to look good in front of others than that is obviously a bad intention but is doing deeds in order to get something from Allah is that bad. Meaning the main intention behind the deeds is to get something from him. Is that allowed? that is my question.
I only ask out of fear of doing something that will upset him because I feel like I'm "using" him for my benefit..it sounds ok but I want to make sure.

As Salaamu Alaykum,
Behind every action of a man, there is some sort of intention.
Whether the deed is done with the primary intention of 'return' or 'sole pleasure of Allah', somewhere along the line each person does want something in return.
Commonly people do good deeds to gain reward... And taking this one step further, people acquire and earn Reward so that they can attain paradise.
In short, we do good deeds because we want paradise from Allah. Whether you say it as clearly as that, or whather you term it differently (for example to be safeguarded from hell or the fury of Allah etc) the fact will be that we expect something in return.
This thought is not sinful, but encouraged. We have been told to do good deeds so that it becomes the medium of our success.
However, one point that should be kept in mind. The deeds will act as a 'medium' for one's success. However, it should be noted, that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala is not dependant and answerable to anyone. He can reward if He wishes and punish us as well. There is no one to question His will.
Thus, we should do good deeds with the intention of reward, attaining Jannah, gainaing the pleasure of Allah, being safeguarded from the hell fire and from Allah's anger etc. But we should not make an intention that I will go to Jannah because of my such and such a deed, or because I am doing good deeds. For Allah know's best which actions are accepted and the final decision is His.
I hope that clarifies your question.
Wallahu A'lam.

jazak Allah khayr for the post..at times the intention gets scary because Allahu Alim if it's running on the fine line between right and wrong. Either way, if the intention is in the right place then Allah will know that already...hmmm just have to be real careful.

As Salaamu Alaykum,
It should also be noted that true intention is what lies deep down within the heart. Therefore, whatever your true intentions are sister, Allah is well aware of them. He know's that your confusion exists, yet it is only Him that you desire to worship and please...
And "actions are based upon intentions"... Insha-allah seeing that you have the concern your intentions will also be accepted.
Please remember me in you humble Dua's
