[As a hanafi] can I pray nafl salah according to the other three madhabs, to experiment, and practice on the knowledge I have regarding them?

As Salaamu Alaykum.

As a Hanafi, you are required to carry out the Hanafi Fiqh. The reason being is that we are submitting ourselves to the religion rather than our desire.

When one begins to practice Fiqh from any of the other three Madhabs the result is usually that one starts following that which his heart desires, thus following his desire more than the religion.

However, although we are encouraged to follow one Madhab, it should be remembered that all the Madhab are correct. Thus the Ulamaa (Scholars) sometimes advice their students to carry out the Masaa'il that is found in other Madhabs. This is so that every Sunnah of the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam is practiced upon. However, the Masaa'ils that are acted upon are selected. Thus it would be inappropriate for an ordinary layman to try and follow a Madhab apart from his due to lack of knowledge.

Wallahu A'lamu Bisawaab.

Nowadays theres detailed books containing the masail of each madhab. I dont see how it would be difficult to learn the basics e.g the method of prayer and wudhu according to the other three madhabs and practice upon it, just for nafl salah.

As Salaamu Alaykum,

Yes, it is true that books are available... But we know that the methods of the other Madhaahib are followable in Salaah and Wudhu etc. But what about other areas of Ibaadah and worship... Just wanted to clarify what i mentioned in my last post.

So I can pray nafl salah according to the other madhahib rulings.

As Salaamu Alaykum,

One can pray their Nawaafil in accordance to the other Madhaahibs, but it should be remembered that this is only on a once in a while basis. The sole intention should be that we are trying to practice upon all of the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallams Ahadeeth And Sunnans.

Furthermore, it should be remembered, that these acts should be done after consulting an 'Alim and asking him the correct Massa'il (rulings) and procedures.

Finally, if one is trying to act upon all of the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallams Sunnah then it would be advised that the other Sunnan are also followed. In simple terms, one should not make the following of other Madhabs an excuse for fulfilling one's desires by giving it the name of Sunnah.

Wallahu A'lam.
