View Full Version : Opinions Needed
As Salam Alaikum
As a Muslim, I have been confronted with a problem that several individuals have constantly come up and asked me for advice for. Muslim mothers want to gain more and more Islamic knowledge and some even would love to memorize the Holy Quran. What is the general opinion on this? Should they, shouldnt they? If yes or no, why and how? Are there alternatives? Jazakullah Khair for your time!

Narrated Anas Ibnu Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
"Seeking knowledge is an OBLIGATION upon EVERY muslim..."
{Ibnu Majah}
--To seek knowledge is an obligatory (not a choice) on EVERY single MUSLIM, be it a male or female, young or old, married or unmarried, EVERY muslim.
If muslim mothers want to memorize the Quran, they CAN! Just because someone gets married and has children, should not stop him/her from seeking knowledge and even memorizing the Holy Quran!
some mothers don't like to leave the comfort of their homes, and their duties/responsibilities at home, and go some place to learn... that used to be a problem. but Alhumdulillah there are so many online institutions from which they can study at their home, with usually a choice for whatever time they would like to study.
waslaam
hope that was helpful

Jazakullah Khair for you input, it was informative and very nice to hear.
My concern is I get questioned by many mothers that they find it difficult to manage their children and responsibilities at home while trying to memorize. Personally, I know of several cases where the mother is unable to memorize quran because she has 3+ kids who are all fairly young. It is still an issue and yes there are ways of doing it at home but they are not neccesarily available in each and every area. Is there a way to memorize, just by yourself without a teacher or if you know of any alternatives in specific that would be great too.

It's all about how determined that woman is to take on such a task. Memorizing the Qur'aan requires life changes. We don't memorize just to memorize but to apply what we learn. So anyone who takes on such a task should keep in mind that the Qur'aan that we know will either be a proof for us or against us. So one should try to purify their niyyah before taking on such a task and remain consistent.
Next would be for the woman or just anyone to set up a schedule. I have one child as of now and if I didn't write down a schedule, I personally would have a lot of problems accomplishing anything. So if a woman has 3 children, she should set a realistic goal. If she really only has time around Fajr, then she should plan it around Fajr. If she can only do it a few times a week, then she should only write a schedule for that many days and nothing more. Start out slowly is my advise and increase how much you do when you are able to.
Remember that the most beloved deeds are those which are done consistently, even if small.
Then one should learn the basics if they want to learn alone. That is proper pronounciation of the letters and the tawjeed rules properly from someone who is qualified.
May Allaah make us successful in this task, aameen

I bought a digital quran...I'm really busy(though not nearly as busy as a mother of 3!) with school and stuff...but I find time to memorize one ayah at a time because the digital quran allows you to put one ayah on repeat. It keeps repeating it over and over again(9 times) Eventually you memorize it :) And your tajweed is good too because you are mimicing the recitor.

Traditionally, husbands must be teachers to their wives. When the husbands are incapable of it, then, Muslimahs are allowed to seek knowledge, keeping in mind that it is safe from fitna when seeking it.
Islam encourages ALL Muslim, male and female to seek knowledge. The Mother of the Faithful, Sayyidatina A'ishah radiyallahu anha, was the place from where the Sahabat seek information from, especially regarding the conduct of the Holy Prophet when the Holy Prophet was in Sayyidatina A'ishah's household.

I would think that more than anything learning the Islamic education is somewhat for a woman more important that memorising the qur'an - the mother will be at home, and the lap of learning for her children. The Qur'an has its haq over you, once you memorise it, its a great sin to forget it - not to mention that a woman cannot always sit down and revise it especially when she is menstruating.
