Cupping is the sunnah of letting a little bit of blood out, as a method of healing.
http://members.tripod.com/maseeh1/advices7/id108.htm
Now there is new research which shows some of the beneficial effects of cupping:

as salaamu alaykum,
the first time i was cupped i looked at the blood that came out of my back (which is perfered). it looked like an organ. the blood was very dark almost brown and in one piece. i was suprised at the appearance of it. but the benefits i began to feel such as the clearness of thought (steady thought with out distraction), my skin after a day felt softer, and the brown lines i had in my finger nails went away. there are more but i would like for others to express their experience. one every third month i get it done. beware not to dring dairy products afterwards drink plenty of water and eat fruits.

When I was in England, I had it done once. I don't know if there is anyone in Canada who does it. I've also seen it being done at the back of the head but I refused to have it done because I wasn't 100% sure the conditions were sanitary. It was quite freaky, plus if you want it done at the back of the head, you have to shave your head :(.
I was contemplating on donating blood but I can't because I've stayed for longer than five years in England! I knew something was seriously wrong with that country :)
http://www.redcross.org/services/biomed/blood/supply/cjdv.html
You spent (visited or lived) a cumulative time of 5 years or more from January 1, 1980, to present, in any combination of country(ies) in Europe, including
in the UK from 1980 through 1996 as listed in above
Maulana where in England did you have it done?
i've always wanted to have it done but i don't know where to have it done.
and yes amina9183 women also have it done. one of my female teacchers had it done because of migraines and she says they are much less frequent now.

Hijama (cupping) does not hurt (from what I have seen) and you can do it when you are healthy too, not only if you are sick. Basically, a little bit of blood is sucked out from the place you put the cup. The best days to do it is on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of the Islamic month, if I remember rightly.
And it is sunnah. I know people here in England who have gone on specific Hijama courses where they are taught how to do it, and they can buy the equipment needed too. If someone wants to get it done here, there are people who do it.
The Arabs do this alot, so check with the Arab areas where you live, it is likely that some people there will know people who can do it professionally.
ETeacher, don't they allow you to donate blood there in Canada?
Wasalaam.

Salam alaikoum ;
it is good to do it ( every sunna is of course good ) ; when I was a kid my gran'ma did it with me even she's not a muslima ; she did it always on my back...
Like the miswak it is a sunna that a lot of muslins have forgot...

I just called Canadian Blood Services and they told me that the five year rule is changed. Now it's 3 months! Anyone who has stayed in England for longer than 3 months is not allowed to donate blood. Wow....that's some serious stuff.
When I was in England, I had the cupping done in Bradford.
I guess if you can't do the Hijamah, the closest thing to it would be to donate your blood. Since they will be taking out blood, it will naturally recycle or replenish itself.

i get migraines too...bad ones. i used to get them when i was younger(elementary school) and then they disappeared for a while(my sister says thats normal and they disappear during your teen years) Recently, though, I have been getting realllly bad ones. And theyre getting worse as I get older. I wonder if that would help...
it just seems so scary....and i wonder where you get it done from!?
i mean...you have excedrin migrain...and then you have cupping----excedirn migraine=not sunnah. but less scary :)

.
somebody posted links above and it mentioned 13,14,15 are the worst days to do it...due to the full moon, and the effects the full moon has on the earth. And also on tuesdays because there is a certain time on tuesdays when blood does not stop flowing. :o

what a strange rule?what is its purpose?..just read moulana..on that redcross site..
Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease (vCJD) which is also a fatal brain disease....:cheesygri
moulana in that list..all the european countries are listed:) i used to think there in western countries maybe lifes much clean and hygiene..i mean surrounding..but when i read that article...
it seems ppl frm africe(no racism intended) and other countries like India pakistan..are much better blood donators..
So in western countried blood is collected by Red Cross?here even tho we have it but the blood is collected and managed by the national hospital here...
its good here in the gulf we dont have such regulations on blood donations..
the only thing abt hijama is u have to shave a part of ure head(rear)....which looks odd..if one is not wearing a cap...
also i once saw on tv too do they take blood from leg too?is that correct?

Looks like I was wrong... here's what I found out from one of the links:
'It was narrated that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that: The best days for cupping are the seventeenth, nineteenth and twenty first [of the months of the Islamic Hijri calendar]. I did not pass by any group of angels on the night of the Isrâ, but all of them said to me, "You should use cupping, O Muhammed."'

I think you got the TIME mixed up. You did it backwards I believe. Here:
Time of Cupping:
Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiallaahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) said: ‘One should not undergo cupping during the 13, 14 and 15 of the lunar month.’ Some Muhadditheen explain that on those days the full moon has a gravitational impact on many things on earth. For example, the sea has high tides due to the full moon. Similarly, the flowing of the blood is also affected and flows faster during the full moon. One may loose much blood in these days if one undergoes cupping. Therefore, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) advised that one should undergo cupping on the 17, 19 and 21 of the lunar month. (Mishkat p. 389). Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) advised that cupping should not be done on a Tuesday, since there is a certain time on a Tuesday that flowing blood does not stop. (Mishkat p. 389). Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) also advised that cupping should not be done on Saturdays and Wednesdays as this could lead to leprosy. (Mishkat p. 389). As the need may arise, cupping may be performed at any time according to the condition or urgency.

Anyways, tell me more about CUPPING in USA if you have any information E-Teacher!

Before the Soviet war many Afghans would perform cupping. I asked my parents a few minutes ago what they used? its kind of strange but according to them in Afghanistan they would use tiny pumpkin formed into a cup shape and they would apply it to their backs and get the blood out. I'm sure other afghans in other territories or tribes used some other form of cups but the above was the story of the pakhtoon tribesmen in afghanistan.
I like to try where can I GO?

Is it really painless?
How long does the proceedure take?
How long does it take to heal?
Does it necessitate a full ghusl, or is wudoo' sufficient afterwards?
Does it break one's fast?
Does it have documented health benefits? - The links mentioned before don't work
Here's a video in arabic demonstrating how its done: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWcpBJY_tH0 (too bad I don't speak arabic)
A guy having hijama done in the back of his head: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCCCq1jJY-w
I found some hadiths:
The Prophet (saw) said "I did not pass by any group on the night when I was taken on the Night Journey (Isra) but they said to me 'O muhammed (sallallahu alayhi wasalam), tell your ummah to do cupping." (Reported by Ibn Maajah; it has corroborating evidence which strengthens it).
Ibn Abbas said: The prophet of God (peace be upon him) said: 'Good is the slave who practices cupping, for this expels the blood, dries the back bone, and makes the sight clear.'

Folks, as much as possible....please try to refrain from putting up links from the Fitna Infested YouTube site. We're thinking of banning it here on SunniForum.
If you find a video on YouTube, then see if that same video is somewhere else and post the alternative site's link on SF. If YT is the only site which has the video, then please try to upload that same video on IslamicTube and then provide the link from IT on SF. As much as possible, please refrain from putting up YT links on SF.
A while back, I saw my 12 year old relatives browsing through YT! Please refrain from visiting YT as much as possible. If you are a sports fanatic and you want to see the latest uploaded videos, then save the Sports category link in your favorites folder or add it to the IE links section. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/browse?s=mp&t=t&c=17&l=&e=en_US
May Allah make it easy for us to control our gaze as much as possible.

“I did not pass by any group on the night of Al Isra (night ascension), except that they said to me, ‘Oh Muhammad (SAW), tell your Ummah to do Hijamah.” (Ibn Majah, 3477)

Assalaamu 'alaykum,
It comes in hadith that Nabi (SAW) has encouraged certain times to perform Hijamah (cupping).
Anas ibn Maalik (RA) reported that the Rasulullah (SAW) said: “Whoever wants to perform cupping then let him look for 17th, 19th and 21st…” (Saheeh Sunan Ibn Majah, 3486)
These above-mentioned dates in fact coincide with the following forthcoming dates this week:
Thur 12th Feb 2009 - 17 Safar 1430
Sat 14th Feb 2009 - 19 Safar 1430
Mon 16th Feb 2009 - 21 Safar 1430
There is of course the chance that these dates may be out by one day, as is sometimes the case with the Islamic lunar calender. Nonetheless, this is an attempt to try and revive the sunnah of Hijamah on the directed dates.
Those interested in having Hijamah performed on the above dates please do contact us early as there will be a first come first serve basis. We will post reminders regarding such dates next month as well insha'allah. Outside these dates, there are days in any week (Mon, Tue and Thur) which are sunnah for cupping and if anyone would like cupping for a particular ailment, they can have that done outside the 17th, 19th and 21st of the Islamic month.
Please also note that the islamic day begins from Maghrib (sunset).

Assalaamu 'alaykum,
Jazaakallah khayr for your interest.
We are based in the UK and have performed Hijamah on many brothers. We have purpose built clinics for Hijamah (cupping) and medical acupuncture services.
If you would like more information, or would like to book an appointment please visit www.hijamahuk.com.
Hijamah is preferred not to be performed on children younger than approximately 14 years of age. However, this figure is subject to clinical assessment and is put forward mainly for safety precautions.
