Is it ok to pray tahajjud in jama'ah? I think the regular answer would be that its fine as a one off but makruh if its done habitually.

What if a masjid prays tahajjud in jama'ah each 27th of ramadan i.e Laytul Qadr-according to some. The East London masjid has adopted this practice seeing as thousands flock to the masjid on this day.

Salamu Alaikum

It is Makruh. The only non Obligatory prayer that should be prayed in Jamaah is Tarawih. See Dur Al Mukhtar.

Are the imams at ELM Hanafis?

Here is the Hanafi view from sunnipath:

Allahu a'lam. The main imam claims to be hanafi but the things he does are not in accordance with the hanafi madhab e.g. he says its not Sunnah Mu'akkada to pray 4 raka'ah kablal jumu'ah. Also does qunoot loudly in jama'ah during witr.

One of his followers once said to me "He's reached a stage where he doesnt have to follow a specific madhab, but he follows the hanafi madhab, not to cause fitnah." I asked him if he's a mujtahid. He said, "No." :p

Salaam. Yeah, the brother is a 'controversial' Hanafi. Though he mixes in different madhabs, he does have an excellent character and from what I have seen he has got love for Allah (swt) and his Messenger (pbuh). I'm not saying that we are but for future possibilities let's not go on to saying bad things about the brother. Allah is our judge, and he alone knows what is in our hearts.

If the imam of the central masjid is a 'controversial' hanafi then the laymen-hanafis will inevitably become controversial, afterall, they are only following their imam.

Is it not our duty to warn people of 'controversial' practices?

Salaamun 'alaik. I am not saying that the laymen Hanafis should follow the imam, infact, they obviously will follow the imam if he is saying that he is a Hanafi, and obviously it is our duty to warn people, but all I am saying is that often in warning other people about a certain other person or people we often get a bit emotional and start back biting. And I am not saying that we are doing this but I am saying that shaytaan is our enemy and he will get us to hate PEOPLE because of their mistakes rather than their ACTIONS, so we better tread carefully and control our emotion and especially our words, Insha Allah. Salaam.

These Salaats are supposed to be performed individually. However, if there is a Jamaat of one or two followers, it is acceptable.

It would be Makrooh to have a Jamaat more than this.
