Assalmu alaykum,

IS it wajib, sunnah, mustahab or makru to recit the tawuz at the beginning of the salaah which is being read behind an imaam? Becasue in quite prayers, as a hanafi i recite behind the imaam and so there is no problem in saying th tawuz but in loud prayers i don't i just stop after reciting the thana, but then when the second 2 rakahs come where the imaam is reciting quietly, should i recite the surah fatiha as i have not recited tawuz? or can i recite the tawuz in the 3rd rakah when imaam reads quietly and so go on to read the fatiah?

As a matter of interest when a person is reading quran anyway, is it wajib, sunnah or just mustahab to recite tawauz before the reading?

Was salaam

Ive been taught to read, only, thana as a muqtadi. Because ta'awwuz is normaly read before recitation of the quran and as a hanafi muqtadi you are not required, neither are you permitted to recite any portion of the quran.

Imam Abu hanifah, Abu Yusuf and Muhammad are unanimous in their opinions regarding this issue. They state that it is forbidden for the follower to recite any portion of the quran, whether it be the fatiha or any other verse, in both silent and audible prayers behind the imam.[Fiqh al-imam]

It is compulsory to recite ta'awwuz before reciting the quran.

Behind the Imam, one only recites the opening invocation (thana'), and then remains silent. There is no need to seek refuge (ta`wwuz) because it is for recitation, and the follower DOES NOT RECITE behind the imam, whether it is a loud or quiet prayer. It is prohibitively disliked to recite [i.e. the Qur'an while standing] behind the Imam, in any rak`a of any prayer. Note, however, that one still does all the invocations of the prayer.
