Prepare for Ramadan

We all know that Ramadan is very close, about 3 months only left. So, let's all together gather thoughts and ideas about how to prepare.

When should a Muslim start preparations for the blessed month Ramadan? I heared that the Sahabah (Radhiallo anhum ajmaeen) started to prepare six months before already - is this right or just a baseless saying?

Second question: How is a Muslim supposed to prepare for this month? Or how do you usually?

It is true, they spent 6 months after Ramadhan asking Allah to accept their fasts and prayers during the month. And, then 6 months preparing and asking Allah to make them see the next Ramadhan. As far as I understand.
