View Full Version : Random Tips for 1st time Hajis'

Alhamdulillah the majority of my family have undertaken the haj so i'll just jot down a few anecdotes that may be of benefit to those that are going this year:
1. do not be put off by all those silly 'scare' stories saying that haj is very hard and there are multitudes of pickpocket thiefs out there and tawaf is like a battle with ppl trying to kiss the black stone.
we should be encouraging ppl to go on haj - not scaring them before theyve even gone!
2. expect alot of waiting around when u get to the haji terminal in jeddah.
valuable sleeping or zikr time depending on how alert u are.
3. if u are going with females, it is wise not to stone the jamarats at the afdhal (most recommended) time, as that time is hard to hold ur own weight let alone someone else's with all the crowd movements etc.
a better time would be after zuhr when there is more peace and hence better concentration in the amal.
[i'll be back later inshallah]
if others have points that may be of benefit, please feel free to add...

4. some haj packages offer food as part of the deal.
u will probably find that ur appetite for food is very much reduced when in the holy lands and u will probably only feel like eating one full meal a day and then snacking in between. try to stay off all those curries! it will make u lazy and heavy - not good for ibadat. eat light and drink much zamzam which is freely available in the haramayn.
5. tawaf on the ground floor (ie. main tawat area) is a slow process and ur body will be pressed against all the other hajis'.
if u want a free-flowing-fast-walking-dodge-those-fellow-haji experience then the first floor is the one for u.
top floor (second floor) is a bit tough bcos of the lack of cover from the sun.
and tawaf at midday is TOUGH! the sun makes a BIG appearence then!
6. it is quite chilly around fajr time in both makkah and madina so a jumper/sweater/hoody and a pair of socks wouldn't go amiss. ie. they are a good idea!
7. shopping wise - there is more choice in makkah (in my experience).
sorry! had to put that in! and for all gold buyers out there...the gold in makkah is cheaper bcos the 'making' charge is waived by the 'shaykhs' during the haj season (apparently - my mate told me)

8. if u forget to take any items related to haj after u hav boarded the plane (or ship, or camel) do not worry - u can buy all those things cheaply in makkah/madina - clothes, slippers, wallets, prayer mats, sleeping mats etc etc
9. the mount of mercy in arafat is not an easy climb when wearing flip flops - be careful!
10. it feels like there are about 10 toilets to every 1000 ppl in muzdalifah, therefore it makes sense to relieve oneself beforehand in arafat...or wake up extra extra early.

11. at the entrances to the haramayn u will have ur bag checked if it looks like u will have a camera or foodstuff inside. theres nothing to worry about. just dont take foodstuff or cameras inside the haramayn. they are fine with u taking bags in containing water, books, musallas, tasbihs etc etc.
12. if u want to get INSIDE the main masjid so u can glimpse the kaba then make sure u head for the masjid BEFORE the azan. cos as soon as the azan is called u get CROWDS and CROWDS of ppl all wanting to get in.
and remember there is also an azan for tahajjud!
13. there is a good chance that u will catch at least a slight cold/fever over there with all the close contact u will have with peeps from all over the muslim world....so its a good idea to take some medicine from home that u know helps u recover from such things....like beechams, parecetomol, lozenges etc.
14. dont take ur sense of direction for granted when u get over there. it is EASY to get lost especially when the crowds get HUGE like after salah and at the end of yaumul arafah.
best to stick with ur group and dont wander far. when the crowds get big even landmarks tend to disappear. be careful.

15. keep ur strength up in preparation for the hajj days.
pace ur ibadat so that u dont tire urself out b4 the big day of arafat.
eat sensibly and avoid big heavy meals.
16. dont be surprised to be approached by beggars in the haramayn. many are false....and Allah knows best. ur heart is a good guide to who is a false beggar or not inshallah.
17. dont worry if u havent chnged money yet. u can get a very good rate in the markets of makkah and madina....u will find money exchangers with their own 'shops' dotted around the other shops...changing £50 at a time is good.
18. a little bit of arabic goes a loooong way. the arabs love it when u even try to speak their lingo. simple phrases like "how r u", "how much is this?", "sorry i dont know arabic" etc will be appreciated.
when in rome....
19. dont worry if u dont get a chance to 'buy' some zamzam from makkah....u can also pick it up from madina!
20. remember this humble servant in ur duas. jazakallah khayr.

Your tips are much appreciated bro.
One point: I read from Hazrat Maulana Saleem Dhorat's guide to performing the Hajj that,"It is bid'ah to climb Jabale Rahmat during wuqoof." (the stay at Arafat)
Not sure if you knew that. May Allah forgive our mistakes.

as salamu alaykum,
here are some more tips...
Since sisters can wear sandals, I advise those comfortable sport sandals. They won’t come off easily like flip flops, peoples toe nails and wheel chairs won’t hurt you that easily. In the Masjid you cannot wear shoes, so there are more chances of getting hurt. If it does happen, put some Zamzam water on it and make sure you have a band-aid to cover it up.
If you are going to climb mount Hira think twice… no think thrice. It’s hard to climb, and quite unsafe with old people pulling you as you climb or if you’re going with kids. Also, do not go in the day time, it gets harder with the heat.
Be sure to get a map that has Makkah, Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah which includes a distance scale so you get a clear idea where and how far each place is from each other. From the Jeddah you might get a map that each place seperately, but it doesn’t show the distances between each place. When you’re in Muzdalifah and when you have to leave to mina, you’ll see buses coming and going with people stopping them and doing odd things like lying in front of the bus so they can get in (I saw it many times). So it’s best to start walking early and not wait for your bus because even if you get a bus, it'll move very slowly. It happened to my family and we ended up walking while some of our group decided to stay for a bus. It wasn’t very far from the red area at mina (Canadian, u.s, turkey tents). Then the people who came in a bus came a few hours later.
Canadian money is also great there. Its better then American money, since they have a lot of fakes (even though ours looks like monopoly money :D)
If you’re going to buy watches or anything brand named, make sure you ask for “asli” the real thing. They don’t lie, you’ll just think it’s a good price and buy the fake product. If you ask for “asli” then they’ll take out the real stuff. For brothers, it might happen with the real nice Jubbah brands. In case you do end up buying a fake and find out later just go back and ask for the real stuff but it’ll be a bit more expensive.
SubhanAllah you might see a lot of signs and wonders of Allah (SWT) there. Keep doing dhikr, and in Madinah send a lot of durud on Sayyidinah Rasulullah (salallahu alayhi wasalam).
For the sisters, to go and send Salam on Rasulullah (salallahu alayhi wasalam) is tough, but just be patient. Women there go crazy; it’s like a stampede when the doors open inside to get close to the grave and Riyadh al-Jannah. Be patient and do not get over excited or panic, you’ll get your turn Insha’Allah. I mean, my sisters who were 9 and 13 at the time did it so its ok (although we regretted taking my 5 yr old sis for Salam since she did panic)
The five yr old sis, did everything at Makkah and Madinah. She did tawaf, Sa’i, even went to do jamarat, she didn’t even miss one. Alhamdulillah she did great, she was happy and loved by everyone there. So if anyone is planning to take kids, don’t get scared, and just believe Allah (SWT) will take care of them in His Holy Lands. My parents took me and my three sisters and we had the time of our lives. People help you and your kids out and it’s amazing to see that kind of help and kindness.
Being with a lot of people will trigger anger and therefore patience is needed. A lot of Patience is required in Hajj and is greatly tested. Just keep doing Dhikr and if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything. Things might not go your way but hey, think of the bright side, you’re in the Holy Lands! Close to Allah and His Rasul (salallahu alayhi wasalam). Make lots of Du’a, do constant dhikr, and keep sending durood on Sayyidinah Rasulullah (salallahu alayhi wasalam).
I hope all of this will help Insha’Allah, and pls remember me in your du’as.
May Allah (SWT) make your journey safe and May He accept your Hajj…ameen

some more tips:
0) you may have to experience ALOT of waiting around ESPECIALLY at the hajji terminal in jeddah on both inbound and outbound flights.
do not be surprised if the wait is for HOURS - u may even see other hajjis (especially the poorer ones - may Allah ta'Ala bless them) sleeping away in the many prayer areas in the terminal. this is bcos they have most probably been waiting hours themselves.
BE PATIENT. this is the biggest test for the modern day hajji.
and whilst sitting around be sure to guard ur gaze from looking upon that which is haram to look at. try not to waste time when waiting around with useless chatting. abundant dhikr is best. send much salam on the Prophet (upon whom be peace) as i heard that even if ur heart is absent from this salam u will still get much reward bcos Allah loves it.
0) this tip may be coming too late for those already booked on flights/packages.
try not to arrive in makkah/madinah TOO early. ie. if u arrive many days b4 the hajj days there is a chance that u will exhaust urself b4 the actual hajj ibadats which is the main reason for u being there.
also madinah is nice to be visited AFTER hajj (i think the ulama actually say its better to visit it after too) as then u can relax in the beautiful city without any tension which is cool. and u can plead to Allah witht the waseela of the Prophet (peace upon him) to accept ur hajj beside the Prophet (peace be upon him).

One more tip please if you are prone to chest or stomach infections take a coursr of antibiotic with you as one course of antibiotic is worth 100 Riyaal each(i.e. 10 tablets)
Another suggestion is that take a Musallah with you the small one just for the Sajdah to save yourself from any germs on the carpets. The small ones take less space so if you are looking for some place amongst people they donnot object on little Musallahs as they require less space, they become petrified with the larger ones and refuse to give you the space.
For relatively easier space search go atleat half an hour before each Salaat.
In Masjid-e- Nabwi there maynot be a space near the doors but if you politely struggle your way deeper inside there is always some space at the farthest end
Refrain from cold beverages to avoid cold or cough only drink Zamzam.
Best time for Tawaaf is one hour before Tahajjud.
Avoid wearing the mask to avoid infections just relish the holy air of Harmains.Wassalaam

The mask?
I think the sister means the white circular face masks that you will see many hajjis wearing (very similar, if not identical to the masks that some cyclists wear).
They cover the mouth and nose and are attached by a string that ties behind the head.
I don't know about the "holy air of Harmains", the place is certainly holy, but being realistic the air at busy times when you are pressed up close to other people coughing and breathing is most definitely not 'pure' in the biological sense.
But we didn't wear those face masks because we didn't want to appear to be different/aloof from the poorer hajjis and also because it distracts from the idea that we are all one ummah on an equal footing.
Of course the masks cannot be worn during the rites of hajj, but outside of those times you will see many wearing them, especially on tawaf.
Allahu alam how effective they are.
Most people catch slight colds on hajj, which is understandable as you come into relatively close contact with people from the 4 corners of the world - some of them carrying illnesses that you have never been 'exposed' to.
from earlier:
"13. there is a good chance that u will catch at least a slight cold/fever over there with all the close contact u will have with peeps from all over the muslim world....so its a good idea to take some medicine from home that u know helps u recover from such things....like beechams, parecetomol, lozenges etc."

Tawaaf after Dhur is not tht big although it is quite hot out there. For Tawaaf-e-Ziarat the best time(in my experience is around 1 A.Mat night after the yaum ul Nahr(10th Zilhaj)
In Mina you are in a group of 10-15 people in one tent and especially the women tend to waste this time in lugv conversation. Refrain from these worldly discussions and concerate on you Azkaar and Ibadaah.
Whoever goes for Hajj please pray for Hidayaat for me and my family because the quickest of Duas in term of acceptance is the one made by a Ghayb for a Ghayb.Wassalaam

When doing ramee on the first day walk towards the left of the jamaraat and pelt from that side it is usually almost empty and on the third and last day try and delay the ramee till after asr time coz after zuhr it will be packed and and i mean JAM packed and also perform the ramee on the top floor (bridge).
and try not to drink freezing cold drinks coz you'll get a sore throat
and when you're in arafaat try not to wonder off coz it's like a maze!

For sisters whilst performing tawaf I have been advised to wear "totes" these are socks with little rubber grips on the soles. They give a little cushioning and prevent slipping and sore feet.I suppose these can be considered a luxury but at the same time it help you keep your feet well to perform the rest of you hajj inshallah.Brothers can wear them too once out of ihraam.

what is the womens ehram
Assalamuaikium,
Was just browsing thorugh this thread and spotted this question.
It is very key to understand the difference between the Ihraam of a Man and Women.
The male ihraam is two sheets of white cloth only. They are not allowed to wear any sewn clothes, cover thier head or wear shoes or socks. They are allowe slippers though.
The Ihraam of a Womean is her normal clothes. No particular colour or foowear. It is best to wear a Jilbaab and some linen or cotton trousers,t_shirt underneath her jibaab. She must cover her hair can wear anytype of footwear.
Hope that is clear enough.
Allah Knows best.

Asalaamu alaikum,
Alhumdulillah, I went for Hajj this past December and would like to share some tips.
First off, if one is able to afford a good package you should keep in mind that though the more established Hajj tour groups charge more than the average ones, the experience they have is sometimes worth the extra money.
When you get to Makkah they take your passport and put it in a bag with others from your group and possibly other groups as well. These passport exchange points are where lots of bad things can happen, and people from my group actually lost their passports and missed their flights home!
What the more established travel groups will do is send their people the night before you're scheduled to leave Makkah to the passport offices and make sure that everyone's passport is accounted for. What happened with us is that each time our group left Makkah for either Madinah or on the way back home via Jeddah, they "lost" my passport and many others for several hours and then miraculously an employee came with a bag of passports and found ours.
Watching to make sure your passport is present at these offices when they give it for storage or take it back is essential. The thing that really helped me was that I put star stickers all over my passport (and luggage of course) and since I had the only unique looking passport, anyone could instantly recognize it and at least tell me if they saw it.
Insha'Allah I'll keep posting more tips as I remember them. :)

Asalaamu 'alaikum,
After the Hajj is over and your group has finished doing the last Rami of the Jamarat on the 13th of Dhul Hijjah, you will be insha'Allah leaving the Mina camps to do the Farewell Tawaaf in Makkah.
We were to leave after 'Asr, but what you need to keep in mind is that during this time the camps' tents will start getting disassembled right in front of you, including any bathroom facilities and any access to running water. No group member told us about this as we were waiting for our buses to arrive, but I was luckily able to do wudhu as the water got shut off.
In fact, no group leaders were around at all apparently. The group's guards who stood at the gates and made sure only members were allowed into our camp had left as well, and the gates were left wide open. This was a very dangerous situation as anyone from the street could come in and do as they pleased.
I was in my tent and watched as some guy who I didn't recognize peeked inside and grabbed one brother's sleeping bag as that brother was looking the other way. I told him and he ran after that man, got his sleeping bag back, and Alhumdulillah gave it to a poor lady on the street who looked to benefit from it more than him.
So my tip is on the last day in Mina, be careful and use the facilities and running water before things get shut off and disassembled, and keep an eye out for people when your camp is suddenly open to everyone on the street, as not everyone during this time is well-intentioned.

Very useful thread. I want to add something to the tips on mobile phones.
While camera phones are not a problem in Makkah at Masjid al Haram, they are strictly not allowed in Masjid un Nabawi in Madina. While visiting madina earlier this year, I wasnt allowed inside at one time because my phone had a camera. Although my dad never had a problem with the same phone on the mens side, the women officials were very strict. So I suggest you keep an inexpensive handset without a camera during Hajj.
Mobile sims are very inexpensive in KSA and there are temporary connections available for Hajis. Popular cellular operators are Al Jawal and Mobily. Stores for these can be found quite easily. I know mobily offers a connection called 'Mobily Rihal' which is a 120 day connection for visitors with low international rates.

Some other tips.
(1) Do not carry very large or heavy handbags with you while performing Hajj rituals. If you must, then donot hang them around your neck. This is dangerous as the straps could get pulled when in a crowd. Try to keep relatively flat unprotruding bags for stuff you need to keep on you. A small schoolbag that can be put round the shoulders is good but donot put anything very important in there. It is better to give important items like documents or medicines to the women as they can hang their purses inside their jilbaab, or under their head scarves, which is much safer. The lesser you keep with you the better.
(2) A handy thing to keep with you is a small collapsable hand fan. It can get very hot when traveling long distances in a bus.
(3) Sister's buy a neck strap for your phone and hang it inside your jilbaab or head scarf.
(4) When sleeping in tents, take care of imp documents and valuables. Better to keep it under your pillow. Dont leave essential documents in your luggage even if it has a lock on it.
(4) Those travelling in a group are usually provided with ID cards to pin up. This is very important for children. Pin them up tightly so they cant pull it of easily. For small children, pin up an additional ID card inside their clothing, as a precaution. If old enough, make sure your children know details like mobile numbers, reference names and camp numbers, by heart.
(5) If you are travelling with your family it may not be possible for everyone to stay very close all the time. Divide your family into subgroups of two or three to walk together while performing rituals. Each family member should always be in the company of the same member. Decide on a gate number or easily identifiable safe place to meet up, incase you are separated.
(6) Be careful with footwear as they can get lost easily. I find it most convenient to carry them with me in a carry bag when I remove them to enter the mosque. Keep an extra pair of slippers in your luggage.

During Hajj season, they keep the Masjid-e-Nabwi open the whole night. For Sisters, there are only specific timings when they can goto Roza-e-Rasool. As far as I remember that was around 10 in the morning (not sure).

When I was in Madina in June they had added an additional 2-hr ladies shift in the evening starting about an hour after Isha. the morning session was shifted a bit earlier. To get ziarat timings one should ask the officials at the door rather than a fellow pilgrim.

i know this would not be classified as something new for ulema, but most of the awaam for some reason hurry to reach arafah before sunset. yes that is the best time to be present no dobt, but your hajj will still b valid if you reach there after sunset. in fact you have till the entrance of fajr time to get to arafah.

another point of note is that most 1st time hajjis rush to leave from makkah to mina, on the 7th, immediately after ishraaq etc. yes it might be the best time from a shariee point of view, but if you have family, womenfolk, elders etc, it would b advisable to leave a little later. the crowds thin out around 9.
