As salamu aliakum
There are several different Sufi tariqas around the world followed by many Muslims and each has it's own Sheikh. However there were no tariqas during the Propthet's time (Sal-Allahu Alayhe Wa Sallam) so why do they exist now? I'm not challenging, just enquiring.

Salamu Alaikum
The principle "something that wasnt, cannot be" is not applied when it comes to Islamic rulings, since then the concept of Madhabs would be void in that case and much more. What is etsablished, however, is that the essence of Taqlid was indeed endorsed by the Salaf and the Ulema, the same way the concept of Tazkiyatul Nafs and Zuhd was endorsed by the Prophet, the Companions and so forth.
Just like the Madhabs, the necessity of having Tariqas was also realized by some in order to have a proper establishement to undertake this purification of the self. As a result now you have many different "paths" and it is indeed a mercy from Allah in many ways if you ponder over its benefits.

the development of the tariqa was "organizational"... each Imam of Tasawwuf organized Tazkiyyah in a particular way.. just like each Imam of Fiqh organized rulings in a certain way.. or each Imam of aqeedah organized our beliefs in a certain way... same thing...
