:salam:,

I'd highly encourage you to go out to sight the moon tonight.

This particularly sunnah certainly needs to be revived in our community in the wake of ISNA's flawed decision, so if you live in North America please go to an open area (preferably where there are not many lights) and look for the crescent moon around and just after sunset (maghrib). Report any sightings to 718-848-8952.

wassalam,
SL

Forest?

No it's the Windy Hill Open Preserve .. that's where Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and the Zaytuna crew goes. Last year, I couldn't find that place and did end up getting lost in the forest. Our masjid was sort of relying on me but I guess that's what happens when you don't have GPS. This year I'm equipped with Google Maps on my PDA.

I'm not sure about the West Coast, but in the northeast, it was not necessary to look for the moon tonight.

In the Islamic calendar, a month can only have 29 or 30 days. Since Tuesday was the 29th, and the moon was not sighted. We knew that Wednesday was the 30th, and Thursday is the 1st of Ramadan, even if the moon is not sighted.

Remember Ramadan is known by EITHER sighting the moon after the 29th, or by completing 30 days. As it says in the Hadith.

I want to wish all my brothers and sisters at SF a very blessed Ramadan and I pray that Allah forgives us all and guides us all and may we all reap the fruits of ramadan to the fullest. ameen

I am not sure what you mean by the North East but the moon is going to be looked for tonight (Wednesday, Sept. 12) - 29th of Sha'aban - throughout North America. The following organizations are definitely looking for it tonight.

Hilal Committee of North America (www.hilalsighting.org)

Hilal Committee of Toronto and Vicinity (www.hilalcommittee.com)

Crescent Watch (Zaytuna Institute ppl) www.crescentwatch.org

Chicago Hilal Committee (www.chicagohilal.com)

Rooyat e Hilal Committee of North America (www.moonhotline.com)

Hilal Base (www.hilalbase.com)

and a number of others InshaAllah. The people following Saudi and ISNA have declared Thursday to be the starting date but we are still waiting for moonsighting confirmation from NA InshaAllah.

BTW, Alhamdulillah, I tried to look for the moon around sunset time. It wasn't an ideal place to look for it but at least I tried...:D InshaAllah I will try to revive this Sunnah regularly. I also suggest everybody try to do it too.

Masha Allah....I can't remember the last time so many organizations did it on the same day! Let's see how the Ramadhan Eid turns out to be.

Interesting. I was told by a reliable source that Tuesday was the 29th. They usually look for the moon for EVERY month, so I trust that they knew which day was the 29th of Sha'ban.

It could be a case of the far East Coast seeing the moon of Sha'baan when the rest of N. America didn't. Thus we were a day ahead of you guys throughout Sha'ban.

No biggie. Dates are local in the Islamic calendar, so the date in my city has no bearing on the date in your city (assuming we live in different cities).

RAMADAN TO BEGIN FRIDAY(posted at 8:40pm PST)
Zaytuna and did not receive any reliably confirmed reports of the new crescent moon being sighted in North America on Wednesday evening.
We will complete the 30 days of Shaban and begin Ramadan Thursday evening with the first day of the fast on Friday.

We are aware of the sighting reports in Chicago and New York and upon investigation found them not reliable enough to establish the certainty required to begin this blessed month.

Toronto decided to start Ramadhan based on moon sighting in Barbados because we are in the same time zone as Barbados.
