salamu `alaykum

Possibly the greatest of all saints. Total awe when reading about him, his life, and his rank with Allah.

The marvelous exploits [manaqib] of our master, the Cardinal Pole of Cardinal Poles [Qutb al-aqtab], 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani.

He is Abu Salih, my master, 'Abd al-Qadir ibn Musa ibn 'Abdi'llah ibn Yahya az-Zahid ibn Muhammad ibn Dawud ibn Musa al-Jawn ibn 'Abdi'llah al-Haddi ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Muthanna ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah the Exalted be well pleased with them all).

He was born (may Allah the Exalted be well pleased with him) in the year [A.H.] 470, and he died in [A.H.] 561. He was buried (may Allah be well pleased with him) in Baghdad.

People have singled him out as the subject of literary composition, and we shall mention, if Allah (Exalted is He) so wills, a small selection from his marvelous exploits [manaqib], containing instruction and benefit for the listener.

Let us therefore acknowledge that we depend for success on Allah's enabling grace [tawfiq], and let me introduce myself as the pauper in need of the mercy of Allah the Almighty, Habib Muhammad, son of the learned Shaikh Sidq Muhammad Ibrahim, al-Qahiri [the Cairene] by place of birth, al-Qadiri al-Ash'ari by spiritual disposition [mashrab] and theological doctrine [mu'taqad].

In the work entitled Bahjat al-Asrar [The Splendor of the Mysteries], the author cites a reliable chain of transmission [isnad], by which the following report is traced to that exemplary guide, Shaikh Shihab ad-Din Abu 'l-Hafs Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn 'Abdi'llah as-Suhrawardi, who said:

'I once heard Shaikh Muhyi 'd-Din 'Abd al-Qadir say, speaking from the lectern in his schoolhouse: 'Every saint [wali] is on the footprint of a Prophet [Nabi], and I am on the footprint of my ancestor, Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace). Whenever the Chosen One [al-Mustafa] (Allah bless him and give him peace) raises a foot, I place my feet in the spot from which he has raised his foot-unless it is one of the footprints of Prophethood [Nubuwwa], in which case there can be no means of access to it for anyone other than a Prophet.''

In the same work, Shaikh Abu 'Amr 'Uthman ibn Marzuq is reported as having said:

'No one participated with him-that is to say, with Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Gilani (may Allah be well pleased with him)-in his spiritual states, his station and his secrets, apart from the Prophets (blessing and peace be upon them). Nor was anyone endowed with superior grace in this spiritual path, apart from Allah (Almighty and Glorious is He) and His Messenger Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace).'

In the work entitled Lata'if al-Minan [Subtleties of Gracious Favors], by Ibn 'Ata'u'llah as-Sikandari ash-Shadhili, it is reported that Abu 's-Sa'ud ibn ash-Shibli (may Allah be well pleased with him) once said, referring to the Greatest Shaikh [Ibn al-'Arabi]:

'I am in the service of the Shaikh who did not leave his special grace to anyone else....'

In the work entitled Qala'id al-Jawahir [Necklaces of Gems], we are told:

'It must be understood that gracious favor is in the Hand of Allah, and that He bestows it upon whomever He will, for Allah is the Owner of Splendid Grace [wa 'llahu Dhu 'l-fadli 'l-'azim]. Nevertheless, it is true to say that in none of the Shaikhs and masters of spiritual states, after the Companions (may Allah be well pleased with them), has there been such a combination of charismatic exploits [manaqib] and praiseworthy qualities, as those combined in our master and our Shaikh, Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (may Allah be well pleased with him), in respect of practice and knowledge ['amal wa 'ilm], noble descent and lineage [hasab wa nasab], talents and blessings....'

In the work entitled Zain al-Majalis [Beauty of the Sessions], we read:

'Suppose it should be asked: 'How do you account for the response of Shaikh 'Abd al-Wahhab ash-Sha'rani to the saying of Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (may Allah be well pleased with him): 'This foot of mine is upon the neck of every saint of Allah'? Why did he restrict its application to the people of his own generation?' The answer to this must be: 'When the Shaikh restricted its application, he was considering the greatest of the saints [awliya'], those who were superior even to him [Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir], meaning the Companions (may Allah be well pleased with them), not those of lower rank in any generation whatsoever, even if they were also saints. Compare the reservation of Shaikh al-Imam Jalal ad-Din al-Muhalla, in connection with the story of Moses (peace be upon him) and concerning the words of Allah (Exalted is He):

O Moses! I have preferred you above [all] the people.

ya Musa inni 'stafaitu-ka 'ala 'n-nasi. (7:144)

''This he interpreted as referring only to the people of his [Moses'] own time, in consideration of those [later] Prophets (blessing and peace be upon them) who would be superior to Moses.''

In the work entitled Bahjat al-Asrar [The Splendor of the Mysteries], toward the end of the report attributed to Shaikh Abu 'l-Qasim ibn Bakr Ahmad, it is stated that:

'The Lord of Truth (Exalted is He) said to him [Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir], in the language of the Unseen: 'Today you are in Our presence, established, secure,' and He seated him in the company of the spirits of the Prophets [arwah an-Nabiyyin], on a platform between this world and the Hereafter, between the creation and the Creator, between the outer [zahir] and the inner [batin], between what is within reach and that which is out of reach. He also gave him four faces: (1) a face with which he can look toward this lower world, (2) a face with which he can look toward the Hereafter, (3) a face with which he can look toward the creation [khalq], and (4) a face with which he can look toward the Creator [Khaliq]....'

In his book entitled Khulasat al-Mafakhir [Synopsis of Glorious Deeds and Qualities], Shaikh 'Abdu'llah al-Yafi'i has declared:

'Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (may Allah be well pleased with him) is the highest in spiritual station, after the Companions, of all the saints [awliya'].'

According to the experts in Reality [muhaqqiqun], the spiritual station of Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani is 'the highest of all the fundamental sources [usul].'

By advancing irrefutable evidence, the compiler of Zain al-Majalis [Beauty of the Sessions] has refuted the statement of the Greatest Shaikh [ash-Shaikh al-Akbar], concerning the superior elevation of the station of Ibn ash-Shibli (may Allah be well pleased with him) above the station of Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani. It is possible, of course, that the statement attributed to the Greatest Shaikh [ash-Shaikh al-Akbar], concerning the superior elevation of the station of Ibn ash-Shibli, was falsely ascribed to him, because he [Ibn ash-Shibli] once said: 'I am in the service of the Shaikh who did not leave his special grace to anyone else.' Allah knows best.

It was the Cardinal Pole and Renewer [of the Faith] [al-Qutb al-Mujaddid], the highly erudite Shaikh Sadaqatu'llah, the son of the saint [wali] Shaikh Sulaiman al-Qahiri, who said:

All of the parties are agreed in unanimity,
of one accord concerning your perfection in your exaltation.

kullu 't-tawa'ifi bi'l-ijma'i muttafiqah
'ala kamali-ka fi 'ulya-ka muttasiqah

Even the Kharijites, the people of deviation, and the atheists [agree that] you are the pivotal point for every Reviver of the Faith.

hatta 'l-Khawariji ahli 'z-zaighi wa 'z-Zandaqah
anta 'l-madaru li-kulli Muhyi 'd-Din.

All of this leads us, on the basis of the decisive proofs that have been cited, and the unambiguous reports that are so well known, to the conclusion that there can be none higher, none superior, and none more noble in spiritual station, in deeds, and in quality of innermost being, among the earlier and the later saints [awliya'], until the Day of Resurrection [Yawm al-Qiyama], than our master 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (may Allah be well pleased with him). So said 'Abd al-Karim al-Jili (may Allah be well pleased with him).

Salam alakum brother Salaman

No Sufi can claim to have risen spiritually without his help; he indeed is the sultan of the saints. May Allah bless his soul and perfume his mausoleum.

It is interesting that Shaykh `Abd al-Qadir stated:

We owe the following report to the three Shaikhs Abu 's-Sa'ud 'Abdu'llah, Muhammad al-Awani, and 'Umar al-Barraz (may Allah be well pleased with them all):

"Our master Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir has guaranteed to his pupils, until the Day of Resurrection [Yawm al-Qiyama], that not a single one of them will die without being in a state of repentance. He has also given the assurance that his pupils, and his pupils' pupils through seven stages of succession, will enter the Garden of Paradise. He said: 'I am a surety for my pupils' pupils through seven stages. If a defect became apparent in a pupil of mine in the West, while I was in the East, I would cause it to be concealed. We must make it our business to direct our endeavors, to the fullest possible extent, toward safeguarding the welfare of our companions. Fortunate indeed is he who has seen me, and how sorry I feel for him who has not seen me!'

"May Allah be well pleased with him, and may He also be well pleased with us, because of him!"

Shaikh 'Ali al-Qurashi has told us: "Our master Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir (may Allah be well pleased with him) once said: 'I was handed a scroll [sijill] that stretches as far as the eye can see, containing a list of the names of my companions and my pupils till the Day of Resurrection [Yawm al-Qiyama], and I was told: "They have all been granted to you."'"

And:

It was Shaikh 'Ali al-Gharthani (may Allah be well pleased with him) who said: "Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir (may Allah be well pleased with him) once told me: 'I asked Malik, the custodian of the Fire of Hell: "Do you have any single one of my companions in your custody?" Malik said: "No, by Allah's Might and Glory!"' The Shaikh went on to say: 'My hand over my pupils is like the sky over the earth. If one of my pupils is not perfectly fine, whereas I am perfectly fine-by the Might and Glory of my Lord!-my feet will not move from standing in the presence of my Lord (Almighty and Glorious is He), until He transports me, and all of you, to the Garden of Paradise!'"

"Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir (may Allah be well pleased with him) was once asked: 'What view would you take of a man who called himself a Qadiri, though without receiving instruction from you, and without wearing a tattered robe [khirqa] conferred by you? Would he actually be counted as one of your companions?' To this the Shaikh replied: 'If someone adopts my name [by calling himself a Qadiri], or otherwise professes his affiliation to me, Allah (Exalted is He) will accept him, even if he happens to be on a reprehensible course, for he is a member of the troop of my companions.'

The Status of Sahabi , Tabi'ee, Taba' Tabi'ee, is granted [Wahbi], it cannot be achieved or attained like Wilayah [Kasbi]. Wilayat can be obtained by abstaining from sins etc.

So, of course it would be ok to say that Shaykh Abdul Qadir :rahim: is the highest of awliya after the above mentioned 3 categories.

Among the Taibeens, some said that Hassan Basri :rahim: is the highest among them, other said Imam Abu Hanifa :rahim:, since in every age millions follow his fiqh, and all the reward goes up to him.

Also there is alot of ghulo [غلو] in this regard, as one of the Beralwi scholar said, Sun doesnt come out until it says Salam to Shaykh Abdul Qadir :rahim: every morning.

What did the sun do before Shaykh was born?

One of the problems with subcontinent islam, is that some people got stuck at shaykh abdal qadir jeelani.

His stature was so great that they refused to move on. They still derive their faiz from him ,through his sould rather than through living shuyookh and the way of real tasawwuf is to embark on the path throgh living individuals.

The path moved on , through the shadhilis ,ibn ajeeba etc in Morocco and the living masters remain.

There is difference between intercession and to say that even if he happens to be on a course, for he is a member of the troop of my companions.

In other words, as long you call your self Qadiri, you are fine no matter how sinful you are, no need to worry. You will be taken care of.

In ths way, one can say it's a bigger honor to be a Muslim than to belong to Qadiri tariqah. So as long as I am a Muslim, no matter how reprehensible, I will be fine.

This is the same belief many people have back home, they think their Shaykhs will answer for them in the grave, and on the day of Qiyamat and save them no matter what sins they do.

This is interesting...

Imam Ja’far Sadique (RA) writes in his book Kashf al-Gahyub (the Knowledge of the Unseen):

“On the night of Friday, 11th Rajjab al-Marajjab 140AH I was engaged in the recitation of the Holy Qur’an. It was past midnight. Unusually sleep overtook me. Despite all efforts, I could not resist sleeping. In a dream I observed strange mysteries. I reached the world of Malakut (the souls) then to the world of Jabarut (the awareness of the attributes of Allah the almighty) where I saw a garden in spring time which had angels lined up and the souls of all the Prophets (AS) gathered together, as well as the souls of all the Awliya present. That is, strange manifestations were to be seen.

In the mean time Ans bin Malik (RA) came to me and said, ‘The Prophet (SAW) the most honoured of the worlds, the exalted and blessed, is waiting for you.’ I went along with him and saw that there was pitched a tent, made of one single diamond, wherein the Prophet (SAW) sat on a majestic throne. In front were sat eleven members of the Prophet’s (SAW) family and so also all his companions (RA).

Seeing me, the Prophet (SAW) addressed me thus, ‘O my son, you will join me in three days time. Prior to that I want you to make a record of all that you observe of this world of Jabarut.’ After listening to this honourable command, I paid my tributes and observed formalities. I had intended to sit but, simultaneously, the Prophet (SAW) ordered me to sit in front of the throne. There were people to be seen in all directions.

In the meantime, I saw two spirits, one behind the other, coming along. They stopped in front of the sacred throne. The spirit in front was light through and through like a white emerald and the one behind was an embodiment of light, like a red ruby. To the first spirit the Prophet (SAW) spoke in a heavenly language and seated him on his right of the throne. Similarly, he spoke a few words to the other spirit and made him sit on his left. Thereafter, addressing Imam Hassan (RA) and Imam Hussain (RA) he said, ‘When with pleasure we all stamped your death certificate the idea that the Ummah would be shocked occurred to me.’ Spontaneously, Jibraeel (AS) brought a glad tiding that from amongst the offspring of these princes would be born two persons who would be responsible for fortifying Islam until the end of the world. And these are the same two souls here.

The holy spirit sat on the right and occupied the stage of Fana Fee al-Rasool which constitutes the stage of prophethood and mercy, through and through. Yet his apparent status would be that of a Gawth and Qutb al-Aqtab. He is my offspring and will proffer great guidance..."

(The other spirit was Hazrat Ala-ud-Deen Ali Ahmad As-Sabir (RA)).

'A Shaykh of the time, Abu-Najib al-Suhrwardi, relates:

In the year 523 Hijri I was with Shaykh Hammad, the teacher of Shaykh Abdul Qadir (RA), who was also present. Shaykh Abdul Qadir (RA) made a grand statement. At that Shaykh Hammad told him, 'O Abdul Qadir (RA), you talk too loftily! I fear for you the disapproval of Allah.'
Abdul Qadir (RA) put his hand on the chest of Shaykh Hammad. 'Look at my palm with the eye of your heart,' he said, 'and tell me what is written on it.' When Shaykh Hammad could not say, Abdul Qadir (RA) lifted his hand from the Shaykh's chest and showed the palm to him. On it was written a luminous writing saying, 'He has received seventy promises from Allah that he will never be disappointed.'

When Shaykh Hammad saw this, he said, 'There could never be an objection to a man blessed with such a divine promise. No one could ever object to him. Allah blesses whomever he wills among His servants.'

'One night, later in his life, fifty of the (spiritual) elite of Baghdad were gathered in his house. The company included all the great Shaykhs of the time, among them Hafiz Abdul Izz Abdul Mughith ibn Harb. He recalls:

That night the shaykh was in a state of inspiration. Pearls of wisdom poured from his mouth. All of us were in a perfect state of peace and bliss, of a kind we had never experienced before. A moment came when the shaykh pointed to his foot and declared, 'This foot is at the neck of all the saints'. No sooner had he said this than oneof his students, Shaykh Ali ibn Hili, threw himself at his master's feet. He took the shaykh's foot and placed in upon his neck. Then all of the rest of us did the same.

Another of those present, Shaykh Abu Sa'id al-Kaylawi, said:

When he said, 'This foot is over the necks of all the saints,' I felt Allah's truth manifest in my heart. I saw all the saints of the world standing in his presence, filling my whole vision. The ones who were of this world were present bodily; those who had passed away were present spiritually. The sky was filled with angels and other beings invisible to the eye. A group of angels descended and bestowed upon the saint the cloak of the Messenger of Allah (SAW). As we all prostrated ourselves and stretched our necks we heard a soundless voice say, 'O sultan of the time, guide of the religion, of the place, O executor of the word of Allah the Compassionate, , inheritor of the Holy Book, deputy of the Allah's Messenger, O he to whose orders the earth and the heavens are given, whose prayer is accepted, when he asks for rain the rain comes and milk comes from dry breasts, o beloved and respected of the whole creation...'.'

“One night in the realm of Jabarut, Fatima-tuz-Zahra (RA) said, ‘O my son, Allah the Almighty has granted to me yourself and the master, Ala-ud-Deen Ali Ahmad Sabir, in lieu of Al-Hassan and Al-Hussain.'”

Asalamu Alaykum,

Astaghfirullah. How can you say such things. Does not Allah (swt) say in the Quran:

Say: None in the heavens or on earth except Allah knows what is hidden...” (27:65).

(Say: O Prophet... and I do not know what is hidden... 6:50)

"La Yuthiru 'Ala Ghaybihi Ahada. Illa Man-Itrada Min Rasool..."
(He (Allah swt) does not disclose the unseen to any being. Except who he will from the Prophets...)

It is shirk to believe that Shaykh Abdul Qadir Al-Jilani knows the 'ilm of ghaib. And as other brothers have mentioned, none is safe on the day of judgement based on family ties or being associated with certain sects: Jilanis, for example.

I humbly advice those brothers who are posting the links about the "miracles" of the shaykh to truly repent to Allah (swt) and realize the graveness of this matter. Correct your aqeedah, for it is the only thing that can save you on the day of judgement. Not even a shaykh can save you on that day.

Can someone tell me about this book? What is it about?

It is a collection of sermons by Shaykh Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani (quddusullah sirrahu). There is another book of his sermons called al-Fath ar-Rabbani which is very similar in content. They are both wonderful books. Purifying the heart from all distractions and acknowledging the Oneness of Allah in all aspects of life is the overarching subject of both books.
