I agree.
If you are REALLY interested in learning and have some free time on your hands, visit the forums on our brother Amr's blog
http://lisanularab.org/forums/
loads of useful information (they have a forum dedicated specifically to learning Arabic as well).
Another very good thing to do is to start reading the threads right from the beginning of the Arabic forum up to the most recent thread. You will see that TONS of threads have been made regarding HOW to learn Arabic, MATERIALS to use, etc. All of it should be useful to you and you won't have to ask a question to which t here is alreayd an answer.
I hope that this helps as well.
Wa'salaam.

CAN YOUR STUDY ON OWN???????????
al-Kitab al-asasi fi ta‘lim al-lugha al-‘arabiya li-ghayr al-natiqin biha. Volume 1
Paperback: 414 pages & CD
ISBN-10: 978 977 416 231 2
Buy: Amazon UK and USA
Product Description
This two-part course in Modern Standard Arabic for non-native speakers has been used successfully in class-rooms at Arabic teaching centers around the world since its first publication in 1987. Approaching the language through a series of themed topics, Part 1 deals with daily life in the Arab world and related matters, concentrating principally on listening and speaking skills, while Part 2 looks at modern Arabic civiliza-tion, culture, and heritage, through passages on such topics as Qur’an and Hadith studies, jurisprudence and Islamic law, politics and governance, finance and economics, literature and the arts, science and medicine, engineering, mathematics, and astronomy. In each section, vocabulary is built up as various linguistic structures and strategies are introduced and practiced in a simplified introduction to Arabic grammar. A full glossary of the vocabulary items introduced in the books is given at the end of each volume, with meanings in both English and French. Comprehensive and easily digestible, varied and informative, these books make an ideal basis for a classroom-based course in Arabic anywhere in the world.
Favorable Review
This is the best out of the three foundation books (The Madinah Books 1, Al-Arabiyatu Bayna Yadayk 1 and Alkitab Assasi book 1) to use for MSA. You will probably pass with at a C if you know all the topic well in a GSCE Arabic as a second language. It is well set out in topical format ie chap 1 cover greetings, chap 2 at the airport chap 3 in the hotel etc. It gives you most of the vocabulary related to that topic in that chapter. It is in color and the new words are in red, it also has vowels in red. It is pictured well which help the beginner to guess the vocabulary as well. It then repeats the same passage without pictures which would help once the vocabulary is memorized. It has two sections the first to help pronunciation (11 chapter) as an introduction to the letters. Then the second section has 25 chapter of topical format. It also has a vocabulary database/dictionary in Arabic/ English & French which is very useful.
Critical Review
The price of the new edition is very expensive in the UK. This is the hardest out of the three foundation books and I do recommend a teacher for this book more than the other 2 books, due to it’s difficulty. In fact it covers most types of verbs that can be found in book 1, 2 and 3 of the Madinah Series. It then expects you to know the patterns for he, she we etc which can be difficult for a begin especially as some of the exercises involve weak verb patterns and you are not given a sample of a weak verb pattern. Answers are not given. The exercises can be long due to a lot of verb repetition which can lead to boredom. This also would lead to it been difficult for revision. However, for the advanced student if he reads the topics only and the new word section he could finish this book in 1 or 2 days. Some of the topics are now outdated and could be revised such as sending a telegram and making a long distant phone call from a outside phone booth. The topic on how to read a newspaper covered ‘your star’ horoscope (differs from Quran and Sunnah) and Palestine (some news issues never change and are just as relevant today as 30 years ago (The edition of this book).)
Recommended Level (Lower Intermediate or Intermediate)
After studying the Madinah Books 1 and/or Al-Arabiyatu Bayna Yadayk 1 it would be useful to cover this book. In fact if you covered Madina book 2 you will still learn a great deal in new vocabulary and other topics studying this book
