Asalaamualaikum,
How can you get the youth and the parents involved at an Islamic school to contribute funds for the Tsunami victims?
We want the kids to feel the pain of their fellow muslim brothers and sister, who were victims of this disaster. We also want to teach them the importance of charity insha'Allah.
Ok so these were a couple of things I thought of.
1. Having a bake sale to collect funds
2. Placing a large coin jar in each classroom for the students to donate from their own pockets
3. Saying additional prayers
Please, reply to this thread soon with any useful suggestions on how to get the kids and their parents involved in this effort...Insha'Allah
Jazak'Allah khair

Have a 'Bring a Buck' day. Each kid brings 1 loonie.
Bake Sales never work.

We had one at our madressah a few weeks ago, and :alhamd: we collected a lot. There was also a letter sent home with an envelope attached urging everyone to donate, and :alhamd:, parents donated very generously. We have a 'savory sale' coming up this week :insh:; it seems people like to buy samoosas, pastries, and pakoras more than cakes, cupcakes, and cookies.

My sister in Regina (Saskatchewan) is getting me to mail these 60-odd new Eid cards lying in the basement that I was supposed to sell years ago. They feature the painting of a Muslim painter-uncle here in Montreal. They'll be selling those to fundraise for Tsunami relief at an Eid carnival, :insh:.
I guess any item can be sold in a fundraiser. How about the traditional chocolate-selling? I know there are companies that supply chocolates for fundraising. If there is an event, the kids can be asked to choose some toys they don't need and then sell those for charity. A good lesson in there I think, about giving up the things one is attached to for charity.
(Just make sure all the toys are "sold" though.)

LoL.... :mash: thats really cool.
Yeah, ppl really enjoy the samoosas, pastries, and pakoras. Some even suggested to sell plates of biryani...LoL...Perhaps that would be pushing it a lil too much.

Selling food at Eid might work, I think. On a side note, there's also a qurbani donation program I just sent out on the eat-halal mailing list.
*** Tsunami Udhiyyah (Qurbani) Indonesia Relief***
· Lamb Qurbani in Indonesia with meat being distributed in Aceh Province to those affected by the Tsunami disaster
· Cost $135 with tax-deductible receipt provided
· Deadline for donation is Wed., January 19th (Eid: Fri., January 21st )
· In co-operation with Indonesian Muslim Community of Toronto
Visit http://www.cordobacollege.com/TsunamiQurbani.htm for details.

Selling after Jummah would work too, especially if you're selling biryaani.

Jazak'Allah khair for all your input.
Insha'Allah we are planning it for Jummah, not this Jummah though. Alhumdulillah, the kids are really enthusiastic about this and the parents are getting involved as well...
