Personally I think that seerah of our Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam as well as stories about Umar ibnul Khattab, Khalid ibnul Waleed and all the other great Sahaabah radiyallahu anhum are very useful. From their great lives, the children learn balance between being brave/confident and having humility and kindness.

Asalamualaikum , confidence in children cannot be brought into children without proper tarbiyyah , books alone cannot do it.

Confident children need to feel secure , that they are not going to be shouted at the slightest mistake .
Confident children need to be encouraged on even when they did it all wrong like it's ok try again im sure you can do just a bit more this time.
They need to feel reassured like it's ok to fail as long as I did my best .
The kids need to know their parents are always there for them and they feel secure and loved.
Hadith - Bukhari Muslim

Abu Salmah related that Abu Hurayrah said, "The Prophet of Allah kissed Hasan ibn 'Ali while Aqra' ibn Habis was sitting nearby. Aqra' said, 'I have ten children and have never kissed one of them.' The Prophet looked at him and said, 'Those who show no mercy will be shown no mercy.'"

There is a book in urdu I read misaali maa by mufti shafi , it is a must read it and give it to your niece's mother .
