Ajrumiyyah translation projects?

As salaamu alaykum.

Does anyone here know if there are ANY plans in the works for translating the Ajrumiyyah (sp?) into English?

I vaguely remember reading on this forum once that Shaykh Hamza Yusuf was working on a translation, but that was a very long time ago and we know how busy the Shaykh is.

Does anyone else know of any other projects in the works for translating the Ajrumiyyah into English?

If so, please post such info.

If so, why hasn't Shaykh Hamza gotten it published yet? I'm sure many would benefit from it.

There has been a number of translations since then including one by myself. This is not to mention Ajurrumiyyah specialists, that is, people who have perfected the way of teaching the Ajurrumiyyah via tables, charts, excerises, Qur'anic & Hadith application.

My general impression is that in terms of translation people are moving beyond the Ajurrumiyyah to something like the al-Tuhafah al-Saniyyah which is a sharh on the Ajurrumiyyah. I myself have translated half of it, and then left it at that.

However, by far the most scholarly translation of the Ajurrumiyyah or rather a translation of one of its lesser known commentaries was done by a non-Muslim Michael G. Carter. He translated the commentary of the famous Shafi'i Jurist and Commentator al-Khatib al-Shirbini entitled "Nur al-Sajiyyah fi Hall Alfath al-Ajurrumiyyah" which the translator rendered as "The Ajurrumiyyah's Exposition by the Light of Intuition". The translation is also accompanied by detailed annotations, with the translation on the left-hand page and the annotations on the right-hand page. The translation occurs in the Amsterdam Studies in the Theory and History of Linguistic Science III, Studies in the History of Linguistics, Volume 24, Arabic Linguistics edited by M. G. Carter. The translation was done in 1981, and consists of 481 pages.

Often when I see non-Muslims doing work like this (work that we should be doing for OUR own tradition) then I can't help but feel dejected. Here we have someone who not just merely translated the Ajurrumiyyah but went beyond to translate quite a sizeable sharh or commentary, and then he did not stop at that, he also provided extensive commentary and notes on the matn and sharh. The same writer also wrote a biography on Sibawayh in the Makers of Islamic Civilisation series. He is just one of many non-Muslims who have tackled the translation of some of the great works of OUR own tradition. Here we (including myself of course) - and I'm sorry to say this - are still struggling to get a decent translation of the Ajurrumiyyah out there. Al-Hamdulillah, I feel that there is a lot going on (these discussions for one, and people studying, and so on) but more can be done and much better.

We need to consolidate our strengths, and pool our resources. The true meaning of "the Believers are to one another like a solid structure, they strengthen and support each other" is that they make up for each other's weaknesses, so that where the one is weak the other one comes in and strengthens him in that department. We can't be strong in all departments. The important thing is that if it we cannot give material support let us at least give moral support. The latter support is often more important than the former because it is what motivates people, and makes them pull through when all the odds are against them.

I'm sorry if I went off a tangent like that, but I feel very strongly about these things. Insha Allah, maybe in the near future more concrete things will materialise like a good quality translation of the Ajurrumiyyah with charts and all.

I did the translation about 6 years ago on a friend of mine's computer while in Damascus. Instead of writing out the Arabic grammatical terms in Arabic I made use of a special transliteration symbols on his PC, and then he changed the program or whatever, and some of the characters came out funny. I've since tried to replace the transliteration with Arabic fonts, but I got tired and then moved on to other projects. So my point is that the transliteration needs some cleaning up. So that's where it's at.

For some strange someone who had a digital copy of it, uploaded it as is on another website, and I don't see its usefulness with the transliteration all mixed up. If you want to see how it looks, then make a google search for "ajurrumiyyah" and you might find it. So it is a bit embarassing to see a work of yours in that state on the net.

So if you're still interested in it, then let me know, and then I'll fix what needs to be fixed, insha Allah, and then make it available.

For the benefit of the others, Shaikh Amienoellah is a South African, who is a real Master in the Arabic language.
He studied/taught in Damascus, then Jordan and is now in the UAE, to the best of my knowledge.

The Shaikh is a master at teaching Arabic to Ajami's, so we could all benefit from him, but please don't over burden him with questions.
