Salamu Alaikum Brother

There is no established tradition that Yazid was the one who initiated the fasting on this day, nor is there any tradition that states this being started by anyone except the Prophet. The reason we fast is because it is a command of the Prophet - peace be upon him - and part of his Sunnah.

The Ahl us Sunnah Wal Jama'ah have concurred on the above matter.

Most actions in the deen are not narrated by a large number of companions but only by a few, the fast on the Day of `Aashoorah is narrated (among others) by `Abdullah ibn `Abbaas Radhi Allaahu Ta'ala `anhuma. He says:

"The Prophet came to Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them "What is this day in which you fast?". They replied, "This is a great day, the day on which Allah rescued Musa and his nation and drowned fir`awn and his nation. So Musa fasted this day in thanksgiving and so do we fast" The Prophet said, "We have more right and are closer to Musa than you." So, the Prophet fasted on that day and ordered (the Muslims) to fast (on that day)"
{An agreed upon Hadeeth}

`Abdullah ibn `Abbaas Radhi Allaahu Ta'ala `anhuma also said:

I never saw the Prophet seeking to fast on a day more (preferable to him) than this day, the day of 'Ashura', or this month, i.e. the month of Ramadan. {Agreed Upon - MSA Translation}

Salamu Alaikum

How exactly did you come to that conclusion? What exactly do you mean by "he didnt say"? If by that you mean he did not narrate any hadith to that regard than that is totally irrelevant when it comes to the Fiqhi application of this command, mainly because it cannot be expected that every command be narrated by every Sahaba.

Secondly, fasting on Ashura is not Wajib or fardh, if one wants to do it he can and if he does not he doesnt have to. This is explicitly mentioned in the Hadith of Ibn Umar in Bukhari.
