I was wondering what type of instrument(s) do Yusuf Islam and Dawud W use in their nasheeds. Is it a duff or not?

JazakAllah :)

I believe they've both branched out once more into using other instruments too.

I believe the majority of their music is instrument free - perhaps contact them to check on the albums that aren't? I think most of the ones on soundvision are duff only.

Contact details:

Yusuf Islam: http://www.mountainoflight.com/
DWA: http://www.enterintopeace.com/contact.shtml

Don't worry, I'm sure most of the songs are fine iA (ahh, vocal Peace Train (http://www.yusufislam.org.uk/audio/peacetrain.shtml)..).

They use precussion pads, like the one in "Us Muslim pay five times a day" [ Sunshine album ].
In A is for Allah, they used the impermissible version of Duf. The duff permissible is called "Single-Beat Duff" ,which is without, what we call "Jhankar" - [ sound generated by small metal plates sown around the present day duff ] .

Assalamalaikum.

Metal rings around a duff are permissible in the Shaf'i madhhab, as Imam Nawawi has mentioned.
