Salamu alaikum
The Ahly Bait of the Prophet were Imams in the sense that they were guides and righteous people, not infallible creatures due to whom the universe was created and to whom obedience is obligatory.
The importance of the family of Sayyidina Ali and Fatima is evident in the fact that we say "Allahuma Sali Ala Muhammad Wa Ale Muhammad" in every Salah. However, we do not raise them above their rank.

I think the brother meant the four Imams of the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah.
First off, ther word Imam is used as "leader". When we say "Aimma' Arba" [ Four Imams ] , we are referring to the great researchers of Islam, from whom the four schools of jurisprudence, in the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah emerged.
Their names are :
a) Abu Hanifah [ Nu'man Ibn Thabit]
b) Malik Ibn Anas Ibn Malik
c) Muhammad Ibn Idris Al-Shafii
d) Ahmed Ibn Muhammad Ibn Hanbal
Rahimahumullah,
These great scholars, defined the rules for the extraction of rulings from the Qur'an, Ahadeeth,Aathar, and Ijmaa, and to make "ijtihad". After these people whoever made "ijtihad", it was upon the rules defined by these people.
Those who do not have the ability to do ijtihad, they do "taqleed [ itteba/following] of their way, called taqleed-e-madhab.
Their utmost importance is that almost every major scholar in the Islamic history, is a follower of one of them. Hence , the foundation of Islamic thought of the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah , are the four fiqh schools. Those who deny the importance of these imams, cannot prove one single hadeeth to be saheeh without adhering to the books of the followers of these Imams.
