:salam:

Ever wish that you knew what the Quraan meant? Ever imagine what it would've felt like standing in taraweeh and actually understanding what Allah (swt) is saying? Ever had the craving to do anything in order for you to get to the position where you could ponder on the words of Allah in the language it was revealed in? Well, :alhamd: here's your chance...

One of the miracles of the Quraan is that it only has 2000 distinct words. So, those 2000 words are repeated for the grand total words of apprx 77000. There are two pdf files on the website i'm gonna tell you about, if you can know the first page and a half, you will techincally know 43% of the Quraan! Slowly, when you learn all the 10 pages, you'll know 83% of the Quraan. They are organized into 4 small cards per page, so you can print it out, cut them up and laminate if you want and carry them wherever you go.
You can save and print the two pdf files, and off you go! (ITS FREEE)
The website is http://www.understandquran.com/80(e).htm
But remember to try to put some time daily to learning the languague and be steadfast and constant in your efforts. May Allah (swt) give us all the strength and wisdom to understand the Quraan. Also, if you think this is beneficial, spread it!

May I also recommend Shariah Program, run by Mufti Yusuf Mullan, who :insh: will join us on the forums here :). Shariah Program runs an online Arabic course which is to run for two months and is due to start on July 1st. As far as I know, all those wishing to register should do so ASAP before 30th June. :insh: Mufti can fill in more details.

The Shariah Program might be having an extension to the course, after the class ends in late August. I think it's better to wait for Mufti Yusuf to give more details on that, Insha-Allah.

Wa alaikum salaam wa arhmatullah,

Insha Allah, we do plan on offering some more of these online courses after Ramadan. It will probably be two sets of classes.. one for brand new people starting from scratch.. and the second for intermediates, who either have been studying elsewhere or have completed the two month summer online course. We'll adjust times so everybody can attend... The anouncement for these classes would be later in mid-August, insha Allah.

Assalaamu alaykum,
For those brothers living in Los Angeles area, there is also an Arabic course which meets twice a week. It is taught by Shaykh Nomaan Baig, whom I believe Mufti Yusuf is aqcuainted with.

I know there is some criticism (see Michael Mumisa's Introducing Arabic) of memorizing individual words; instead it is recommended to memorize phrases and know what they mean.

[Just an FYI]

And make sure you're not just self-translating in your head; you should understand the Arabic in Arabic. E.g., when you hear "Allah" or "rasul" do you automatically think God and Messenger. Probably not; you just know what they mean.
