One of my teachers recommended this book for improving Arabic and vocabulary,
Tales from Kalila Wa Dimna: For Students of Arabic (Paperback)
http://www.amazon.com/Tales-Kalila-Wa-Dimna-Students/dp/0879501316

It's supposed to produce the best results when used with the accompanying Audio CD. I haven't properly started it but so far I think it's really good, especially the listening portion.

The introduction to the book says that those who study this book (in-class or on their own) should have done at least 1 year of Arabic.

I found out today [via a teacher] that Mawlana Abu'l Hasan Nadwi (the famous intellectual, scholar and author of various Arabic literature books) said he went over Kalila wa Dimna 50 times!

I think it is available in Pakistan as well but it may be a different print and I am not sure if the exercises at the end of each story are the same or not. In any case, I'll find out.

No there is no English explanation although there is an accompanying glossary of terms and after each story, there is a limited list of translated words. On the whole, the entire text is in Arabic. The CD is used for listening to the stories.

There is a version of this book which is printed in Pakistan and has NO I'RABS (vowels written on the verbs). The publishers in Beirut have printed a watered-down version with I'rabs. This is an excellent book for applying grammar rules and learning how to translate.
The Amazon version also does not have I'rabs and is better organized. It appears to be a abridged version.

Alhamdulillah, I read most of this book in my third year to one of my teachers out of class. This book trains (for lack of a better word) a student how to dissect and analyze sentences. I believe that this book is taught in some Islamic Universities. The Arabic text can be difficult to understand at times and ideally, the student should have already studied all four parts of Qassas An-Nabiyyin or the equivalent thereof. Allah knows best.

Salaam,

Those who enjoyed the arabic of Kalila wa dimna - would most likely also enjoy - al-lis wal kilab - by nageeb mahfooz - Kalila as well as lis wal kilab was part of the A Level arabic course in the UK when i was studying the course in my third year - Its not deeni and is fictional - but the language is excellent.

For anyone considering purchasing this book, I would suggest to get versions which are bila i'rab (without the fatha, kasra, and dhamma). The one I linked to above is bila i'rab.

Is there a difference otherwise? i.e. other than one version having i'raabs and the other not having i'raabs.

I have yet to see the other versions out there. I have the version which I got from Amazon (its published by Spoken Language Services (http://www.spokenlanguage.com)). I will hopefully get the ones sold in Pakistan in the next few days. The content is most likely similar.

Kalila wa Dimna, a bestseller for almost two thousand years, and a book still read with pleasure all over the Arab world.

Kalila and Dimna was originally written in Sanskrit, probably in Kashmir, some time in the fourth century A.D. In Sanskrit it was called the Panchatantra, or 'Five Discourses.'

Three hundred years later, after the Muslim conquest of Persia and the Near East, Ibn al-Mukaffa’ chanced upon Burzoe’s Pehlavi version and translated it into Arabic in a style so lucid it is still considered a model of Arabic prose. Called Kalila and Dimna, after the two jackals who are the main characters, the book was written mainly for the instruction of civil servants. It was so entertaining, however, that it proved popular with all classes, entered the folklore of the Muslim world, and was carried by the Arabs to Spain. There it was translated into Old Spanish in the 13th century. In Italy it was one of the first books to appear after the invention of printing.
