The Ithna Ashari Shiites, also known as "Jaffaris" and "Imami Shiias" have 5 usools [ priniciples ] and 10 furoos with regards to the Deen.

The 5 Usools or principle/core of the deen are :

1)Tawheed

2)Adl

3)Nubuwwa

4)Imamah

5)Qiyamah.

According to the Shiite scholars anyone who rejects one of these 5 usools he commits Kufr al Akbar, which is the type of kufr that expells one from the millah. The usool of Imamah regards that one should believe in the Imamah of the 12 ; Ali, Hassan, Hussein and the 9 descendents of the latter, and uphold whatever is implied by this Imamah. Since the Ahlas sunnah dont establish Imamah for most of the 12 then according to the Shiite doctrine they fall into Kufr al Akbar.

Then there are the 10 Furoos or branches of deen:

1. Salat(Prayers)

2. Saum(Fasting)

3. Hajj (Pilgrimage)

4. Zakat (Poor Rate)

5. Khums(Wealth Tax)

6. Jehad(Striving)

7. Amra-Bil-Ma'aroof(Enjoin what is good)

8. Nahe-Anil-Munkar(Forbid what is wrong)

9. Tawalla(To love and respect the Ahl-ul-Bait and their Friends)

10. Tabarra(To disassociate from the enemies of the Ahl- ul-Bait)

According to the concept of tabaraa, the Shiites are required to bear hatred and enemity against the "enemies of the Ahlul bayt" and those who love, follow and support these "enemies of the Ahlal bayt." It is mandatory upon a Shii to declare his full innocence towards them, to disassociate from them and oppose them with extreme hatred. A person cannot be a Shii, according to their fuqaha, who lacks tawalla and tabarra.

So who are defined the enemies of the Ahlal Bayt?

According to them, enemies of Ahlal bayt are Abu bakr [ whom they regard the person who took away khilafah from Ali, and denied Fatima's share of inheritence], Umar [ Whom they allege to have been the one who burnt down the house of Fatima, caused her miscarriage and eventual martyrdom etc. ], Uthman Ibn Affan, Muawiyah Ibn Abi Sufiyan, Umm al Momineen Ayesha bint Abi Bakr, Zubayr Ibn Al-Awaam , Talha Ibn Obaidullah [ this is because the latter four got engaged in a battle with Ali] and a large number of the Sahaba [ the Muhajiroun and Ansar] because they gave Baiaah to Abu Bakr and the other Rashidoun caliphs before Ali , and supported them fully.
and so Anyone, be it from the generation of Tabieen till the present day people, who loves, follows and supports the ones mentioned above , will subject himself or herself to the tabaraa of the rawafid/ Imami Shiites. An Ithna Ashari Shiite is allowed to practice extreme taqiyya with the ones who are subject to Tabarraa, both in action and speech, with or without the presence of danger, and for whatever intention that is sought to be accomplished.
In fact to a certain extent it is mandatory upon them to make full use of Taqiyya as their authentic sources regard taqiyya to be 9/10 ths of the religion, and a person cannot be a "Shia of the Ahlal Bayt" unless he practicies Taqiyyah.

So it is a big hypocrisy they adopt when they try to fool the unaware masses of the Ahlas sunnah with such approaches, "oh we dont curse abu bakr and umar," "oh we dont bear hatred towards the sahaba" etc., which are in reality done in a state of taqiyya, and their intentions range from various kinds of fitna like from attempting to spy and spreading lewdness till placing doubts in your faith and persuading you to become one of their Shiites.

So beware of them. Know this once again that according to their both past / classic and present scholars, a person cannot be a shii unless he uphelds the concept of tawalla and tabarra. And so it is never possible for a person to be an Imami Shiite and at the same time love and respect the likes of Abu Bakr, Umar, Ayesha and the other Sahaba.
And so if you find any Shii trying to assimilate and brefriend Sunnis by such claims that he refuses to curse or hate the sahaba mentioned, then ask them if they had abandoned the furoo of tawalla and tabaraa, and inquire of them if they have rejected the popular Shii Dua against the the two Idols of the Quraish [ Duaa Sinamaye Quraish] and then you will find how the veil of Taqiyya gets unmasked and all their evil intentions, plots and attempts get exposed.

dear brother mossy, the have nothing to do with Imam Abul Hasan al Ashari.

They are refered as "Ithna Ashari" which in arabic means 12ers, taken after the 12 Imams of the Ahlal bayt and Itraa which the Shiites allege to follow and hence they call themselves as Ithna Asharis. They are also refered as Jaffaris and Imamis.

I wodner why they're called Ashari..

Ashari or rather 'ashari is combined with ithna to mean 12. Ithna means two and 'ashar means ten=12
as brother murabit explained

Also for further insight into this issue, here is what the "Dua Sinamaye Quraish" is really all about:

http://www.ansar.org/images/sanam.jpg
http://www.ansar.org/images/sanam1.jpg

"O' Allah, sal ala Muhamed wa ala aal Muhamed and curse the two idols of Quraysh (Abu Bakr and Omar), its (Quraysh's) two sorcerers, its two tyrants, its two liars, and their two daughters (Aysha and Hafsah) who (Abu Bakr and Omar) disagreed with your order, denied your revelation, rejected your goodness, disobeyed your messenger, altered your religion, tampered (harafa) with your Book (Al-Quran), loved your enemy, rejected your lovers, suspended your verdicts, invalidated your orders, did not believe in your proves, antagonized your lovers, patronized your foes, ruined your country, and corrupted your slaves, O' Allah curse them both, their followers, their lovers, their people, their adherents, their partisans, their disciples ............."

That was the Supplication of the Two idols of Quraysh, who the shia bestowed a great importance on it and the shia scholars consider it as a valid supplication. The shia scholars who mentioned that supplication in their books are many, they are not limited to the following, but just as an example: Al-Kaf'ami, Al-Kashani, Al-Nouri Al-Tubrisi, Asadallah Al-Haeiri, Murtada Hussain, Mandhoor Hussain, Al-Karkey, Al-damad Al-Hussaini, Al-Majlisi, Al-Tasaturi, Abu Al-Hassan Al-Amily, Abdullah Shubbar, Al-Haeiri, Mirza Habeeballah and many many more. They are all Ayatuallah, who has the highest rank in shia clergy.

Also their Imam Khomeini approved it. In a book called Tuhfat Al-Owam Maqbool, the following scholars agreed on the authenticity of the supplication:

1. Ayatulallah Sayyed Muhsin Hakeem Al-Tabtiba'ei

2.Ayatulallah Sayyed Abu Al-Qasim Al-Kho'ei

3.Ayatulallah Sayyed Rouhallah Khomenie

4. Ayatulallah Sayyed Mahmoud Al-Shamroudi

5.Ayatulallah Sayyed Muhamed Kazim Shari'atmdar

6.Ayatulallah Sayyed Ali Al-Naqi Al-Naqari

Wonder who you talking to Br. Mossy? I was trying to point out the letter 'ayn in the word 'Ashari. :) One is the letter alif and that is Abul Hasan Ash'ari and the other is with the letter 'Ayn, it's 'Ashari which means that which has to do with ten. Brother Murabit was talking about the latter one though it was spelt Ashari w/o the ' . 'Ashariyyah is derived from the word 'asharah which means ten.

does anyone really care anyway?.......oh well....unless you were talking about the word 'wonder' which was spelt wrong...just kidding......i was just trying to emphasize on the difference of the letter alif and the letter 'ayn
