View Full Version : ANSWERED: Ghusl: drops falling back in bucket
Assalm alykum,
when one is having ghusl and pours water from a jug over him/her, drops of water fall of him/her or boounce of him/her back into the bucket (which is full of water) sometimes. Now does that mean all the water in the bucket has become unusable, becaseu the condition is that the water has to be flowing, but if drops of water land back in the bucket then there are drops in the bucket which will not be flowing, and they will be poured over the body again.
If the drops are allowed to fall back in, then how much is allowed to fall back into the bucket?
If the water only becomes unusable if the drops were najaais becasue they were poured over najaais part of body then i take it the water would definelty become unusable, but what if one is not sure that the drops were off a clean part of the body or of a part with najassat on it.
May Allah reward you.
Was salaam.

Used Water During Wudu
Answered by Sidi Moustafa Elqabbany
My question is in regards to wudu in the Shafi'i madthab. I was making wudu the other day when I became conscious of the water dripping from the outside of my mouth and nose as I scooped up the next scoop of water to wash my face. As I had this water approaching my face I noticed a drop fell from my nose/mouth area or upper lip and dropped into the water I was about to wash my face with. Is this water then considered ''used'' water and thus impermissible to wash my face with or is it still considered pure as similar to one being in the shower and having water running off their head and into their hands.
There are three kinds of water: purifying, pure, and filthy. Only purifying water can be used for wudu and ghusl. Most of the water we encounter is purifying. Water used for the first washing of a limb of wudu or ghusl is referred to as used. Used water is pure but not purifying, so it cannot be used for wudu. Water used for sunnah acts, like rinsing the mouth and nose, remains purifying.
If water that is pure (but not purifying) mixes with purifying water, one asks:
1. If the pure water were pomegranate juice, would it have been enough to change the taste of the purifying water? If yes, then the water is pure but not purifying; otherwise, one asks:
2. If the pure water were black or red grape juice, would it have been enough to change the colour of the purifying water? If yes, then the water is pure but not purifying; otherwise, one asks:
3. If the pure water were frankincense, would it would it have been enough to change the smell of the purifying water? If yes, then the water is pure but not purifying; otherwise, it is purifying.
If one doubts whether the pure water would have been enough to change the purifying water, one assumes that the purifying water is still purifying.
Note: The above merely answers the question asked. There are many other details that might be relevant in other scenarios.
Allah the Exalted knows best.

May Allah reward you ohossino. from that the small amount of drops back in the bucket would make no differnece and the water can still be used.
Now would the hanafi view be same?

allahu aalim... i remember reading however that one of the qualities of the water must be significant to the amount that the water changes
the taste, colour or smell of the water must b significantly changed when it adds to the water.
However, I am not tottaly sure about this, inshallah one of the scholars can explain.

:salam:
The following is from "Essential Islamic Knowledge" by Qadi Thana'ullah Panipati, english translation of Mala Budda Minhu (Hanafi):
"Purity of large and small quantities of water:
Flowing water, or water in great amounts [like water in a lake, pond, or large pool, often roughly estimated to be at least ten square dhira or ten by ten] will not become impure if impurity falls into it, or by the water's flowing over impurity. Unless the impurity effects a change in the taste, colour, or smell of the water [for then the water will be considered impure], it will be considered pure and usable for purification.
When the impurity falls into a small amount of water, the water becomes impure and cannot be used for purification."
