As-salamu 'alaykum
At the moment I only have the option to self-study Arabic so I was hoping to get some advice as to where I should start. I can read and write Arabic (albeit slowly).
I have the Arabic Tutor books, the Madinah Arabic Course books (including the LQ Toronto video lessons and various other study aids) and the Arabic Between Your Hands books (with the accompanying audio). My main objective in reading and comprehension!
- So where should I start?
- What should I start with?
- Should I be using any other books to supplement my studies and aid me in my understanding (i.e. Arabic Verbs & Essentials of Grammar perhaps)?
- Is there any particular method I should employ to help me in my studies?
I look forward to your feedback and subsequent advice!

Go through lq toronto lessons. Once you are finished with the lessons for book 1 than start arabic tutor. After madinah book 2 is completed than start qasas. Insha-Allah this should help.
There are two kinds of dictionaries, classical and modern. Until book 2 you will need the modern dictionary and when you finish book 3 you will be able to use the classical one insha-Allah.

Walaykum salâm wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
Jazak’Allahu khayran for your reply and subsequent advice.
Do you mean that after I have finished Madinah book 1 I should start the Arabic Tutor books and study all four of them before I start studying Madinah book 2, or do you mean that I should [after completing Madinah book 1] study the Arabic Tutor books alongside Madinah book 2?

I recommend that you use GLOSS (gloss.lingnet.org). It has lots of audio clips along with transcripts and translations. It might seem difficult to you, but you will definitely learn from this site. This is one of the sites that the US government uses to train its linguists.

May Allah reward you for your zeal to learn Arabic; the language of Islam!
Brother, I highly recommend you check out www.shariahprogram.ca. The website has lots of material to get you on your way, right from the Arabic alphabet, and you can then join in the new classes scheduled to start from March 21st, 2009 InshaAllah.
There's a thread going on about this program in this same forum (it's a sticky). Please check it out too. I am a "living" testimonial for this program so please feel free to ask any questions.

assalamu alaikum
I looked at the shariah course & madinah arabic. I decided on Madinah arabic because
1. I want to concentrate on arabic first
2. there is so much material support to get u thru.
I chose to sign up for 'on-line teaching. I need to pushed to keep going at a good pace.
I picked http://www.eaalim.com/index.htm
Book 1 starts Sat evening 7 march @ 6.30pm GMT. 3 months x 2hrs p/week for about $150 US.

I would recommend sunnipath diploma. I am on my third course in the series ( it is the 4th course overall in the diploma). I didnt do the first one because I can read arabic and that is what the first course is supposed to teach you.
Alhamdullilah grammar of small surahs like AnNaas is very clear. Whereas I will probably make mistakes hailing a cab in the middle east the surahs and ahadith are starting to become clearer.
I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Arabicpod.net is a very good site to pick up spoken arabic. They teach MSA and colloquial. Its free to download over a hundred mp3 audio podcasts.
This site makes learning fun. I listen to these podcasts when I drive and practice my arabic that way. I really don't have time for a class.
