As salaamu alaykum.

If one studies Islam in the style of the Indian Subcontinent's scholars, where does one go with their studies once they have completed their Dars e Nizami?

In looking over the website of Darul Uloom Deoband I found, in the section entitled "System of Education", that after the 8 year Dars e Nizami course (which includes the Daura e Hadith), there are a number of "Mastery" (i.e. Takhassus) courses that one can complete in various fields such as Fiqh, Tafsir, Theology, and Adab. But where does one go in terms of study of a particular subject after finishing even the "Mastery" courses for that subject. For example, in the field of Hanafi fiqh, after completing the Mastery course, in which one studies the Durr al Mukhtar, does that mean that one knows all that there is to know about Hanafi fiqh? Would there be nothing left to study in the field of Hanafi fiqh? Or would it at that point consist of self-study of some sort? If so, then could someone please describe the type and scope of this self-study?

Could someone also do the same for the other subjects of Tafsir, Adab, Hadith, etc.?

Jazakallahu Khair.

Wa'salaam.

This is interesting; someone should reply.

From what I read in biographies of ulama; basically, one has to do independent research after reaching a certain stage of knowledge. Look at contemporary ulama like Wahba az-Zuhayli and Taqi Uthmani.

Pahalwaan khan sahib, my honest and humble opinion is that you should try finishing the 8 year old aalim course, and then proceed towards the mufti ...before you talk about anything else.

talking and questioning in extravagance is futile, my friend. :p

Assalmu aalykm,

Well I once asked this exact same question to a Sheikh, and he told me that after the mastery course/s it's really self study, reading etc.

I guess after specialising in iftaa, and becoming a mufti, everytime a new issue comes up you have to reasearh it's reality, and as you have already mastered the principles of iftaa, by doing reseach of the new issue you can come up with a fiqh for it.

Like what Mufti Taqi does on all the new ecomnomic issue. Reasearch the reality of the new issue, and then do your stuff.

Good question - even if hypothetical. Some more light on this would be interesting from an academic PoV.

Just FYI: Some of my professors have also done their PhD in worldly disciplines so they are able to better tackle and eradicate their fitan, e.g. the fitan of capitalism via a PhD in Economics... Makes for an exceptional combination!
