Sallamu Alaikum
An extreme Shia asked one of Ahly Sunna: "Who is better than four with whom the Messenger of Allah is the fifth?"
He was alluding to Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Hussain when the Prophet wrapped his mantle around them in the hadith of mubahala.
The Sunni replied: "Two with whom Allah Most High is the third."
He was alluding to the Prophet and Abu Bakr in the cave when the Prophet said to him: "What do you think of two of which Allah is the third?"
Narrated in Tabaqat Shafi`iyya al Kubra (Hijr ed. 5:98).

interesting you brought that up.
From my limited knowledge of the Shia stance on this, they would say that the verse of the cave referring to Abu Bakr (9:40) is a historical fact which cannot be denied. Unfortunately their problem with Abu Bakr apparently starts after the prophet's (s) death...
If anyone else can clarify, i would be grateful.

They believe that although Abu Bakr - May Allah bless him in abundance - was with the Prophet, the Sukayna of Allah only came down onto the Prophet and not on Abu Bakr. There was no special position of Abu Bakr being present with the Prophet at that time. It was just coincidence.

jazak Allahu khair...
Abu Bakr, the leader of the ummah after the prophet (SAW), the greatest companion of the prophet (SAW), one of the 2 in th cave with whom Allah is the third, the most noble, the sincere, the siddiqe, the blessed, the one who gave his life and wealth for Allah most high and his prophet (SAW), the mujahid, the preserver of the Quran, the attester of truth and the best man in creation after the prophets peace be upon them all.
O Allah grant abu bakr the highest station in jannah possible for any after the prophets (peace be upon them all), make him a companion in jannah alongside the prophet (SAW). O Allah open all the doors of jannah for him and forgive him for any shortcomings he may have had. O Allah, strike fear into the hearts of the enemies of Islam when his name is mentioned, O Allah do what you will to those that slander him. O Allah grant this ummah more like him. Indeed the wombs of the mothers have failed to give birth to any comparable to him.
