For all those living in the Toronto area, I would like to know what food places around here are confirmed halaal. I won't question the halaal status of the meat that is served at halaal restaurants, but usually people (including the owners) are unaware that other ingredients used in bread, etc can come from animal sources too. And whats the deal with the popeyes chicken places?

And also, what sandwich bread (double roti) is halaal over here? Everything i've come across so far has monoglycerides.

if you go to http://www.zabihah.org or com not sure but you do a search on canada, ontario, toronto or mississauga or whatever area you can find all the halal grocery stores as well as restaurants within that area with #s, addresses, and ratings as well as reviews of them.
depending on where you are and what you like but there are tons.
from the top of my head i can say a few of them but they're all in mississauga.

aladdin- middle eastern restaurant, serves sharwarmas, hummus, and makes fresh fruit juices.. located on hwy 10 (hurontario st) in mississauga, off the corner of hwy 10 and close to dundas st. 905-275-4700

there's also a pizza store right next to it thats also halal (double double )

an indian restaurant right behind it thats also halal meat, though it serves alcohol....

there's also a chester fried chicken right next to it thats halal its like kfc, havent tried it yet so couldnt tell you.

across the street is another kashmiri/pakistani restaurant, its right next to the t.l. kennedy school on hurontario (hwy 10). Now if you go further down the road to dundas depending on where you turn, if you turn left from there there's a plaza there that has dosas, and some other halal restaurants all the way down the street there. Now if you go further down pass dundas still on hwy 10, you'll come to a few more halal restaurants in the plaza there, mainly all indian.
if you turn a right on dundas, you'll come to a nader halal meat store on your left hand side, and a bombay something restaurant on your right, right next to that is the Sound Vision Canada store...few doors down is Lahore Tikka House. If you walk down the street a bit more to COnfederations Pkwy, there are 2-3 halal restaurants within that blue building.
Tarboush that serves sharwarmas as well, and 2 other indian restaurants.

ALso down the dundas you'll find tons of restaurants depending on where you want to go or what you're in the mood for.
there's a mega broasted also thats like kfc or popeyes but its a bit juicier.

then yes the popeyes, about 15 locations located within the GTA area, mississauga, brampton, bramlea, oakville, scarborough, and a few other areas.
mississauga has 3-4 alone and its very popular.
you asked what the big deal was, well its just a fried chicken cajun style place. its like kfc chicken but its spicier and crispier, and more grease. The gravy is amazing its not dried up and has flavor and a kick of spice in it. The other food that it offers are also good.
the major ones of popeyes in mississauga are located on hwy 10 and central pkwy, behind a gas station.
there's another located on eglinton and dixie rd, behind the club 108, and within that plaza there are 2 other halal restaurants, a chang and huang (thai restaurant), good food and halal meat, but they serve alcohol too, by law they're suppose to.. tried not to sell it a bit and was told sell it or be closed and i guess they have families and decided its ok to sell it Allahu Alim.
usually i like to order from here and ask them to deliver it or i pick it up or go during the day when the drinkers dont come at that time..
then a new popeyes opened up on mavis rd and matheson in mississauga.

there are 2 other restaurants there 2 that are halal, karma thats an indian/ chinese restaurant, and then one called nando's.

then on hwy 10 and eglinton in a plaza is another indian restaurant, its right behind an amato pizza store.
and if you go down further on that hwy 10 towards bristol is another indian restaurant in the plaza next to a bank, and an italian restaurant and mcd's. not sure on the name but thats from what i remember.

there is a halal fast food place in square 1, a shopping mall in mississauga, its in the food court, they serve sharwarmas, and all the middle eastern food like grape leaves, rice, stuffed veggies etc... not bad.... but its better this than the other foods out there...

then on burnamthrope and wolfedale there is a place called bbq tonite and another kabab place.

err there are at least a dozen more around that area, but im just listing some from the top of my head.. if i remember more i'll add them.
but if you need some from the main downtown GTA area its better to check the site or just ask someone that knows that area well or goes there a lot to tell you of where things are and how they are.

I did reserach in above six supermarkets in Toronto in 2005. The reserach is also published in a Halal food book "A Comprehensive list of Halal Food Products in US and Canadian Supermarkets. This book includes 33 supermarkets coast to coast in USA. The above website and Halal food book is the eduactional efforts of Muslim Consumer Group for Muslims to bring only Halal food products from supermarkets to their homes and masajid. For all those living in the Toronto area, I would like to know what food places around here are confirmed halaal. I won't question the halaal status of the meat that is served at halaal restaurants, but usually people (including the owners) are unaware that other ingredients used in bread, etc can come from animal sources too. And whats the deal with the popeyes chicken places?

And also, what sandwich bread (double roti) is halaal over here? Everything i've come across so far has monoglycerides.

It is very hard to know what ingredients or other food products are using by the Halal meat restaurants. Many owners do not know the Halal status of ingredients. For example if they are supplying fried rice dishes they have to use soy sauce. There are two kind of soy sauce. Naturally brewed soy sauce which has the wheat and soy as the ingredients. This is Haram soy sauce because it contains 2-3% alcohol. It is made just like wine. The all purpse soy sauce is made of hydrolyzed soy protein, corn syrup, water and salt. This is Halal soy sauce and La Choy is brand name of this soy sauce which is available at food service companies who supplies foods to restaurants and also available in supermarkets. Many Muslim restaurant owner do not know about this and many other ingredients. Very rarley Muslim restaurant serve regular bread but they make their own Naan and roti. They made the yogurt from milk and do not buy from outside. You can see the Halal bread brands in six supermarkets in Toranto at www.canadianhalalfoods.com(I am the webmaster of this website). I heard that 7 popeyes chicken use Halal chicken and Halal coating in Toronto but I can not verify because I live in Chicago area. Mono Glyceride can be Halal if it is obtained from Soy sauce. Kosher symbol like COR or OUD on food packages containing Mono & diglycerides indicates it is from soy fat and Halal.
